“Budget Builders: Planning a Dream Vacation!”

Introduction

Guiding Question:  

How can math help us make smart choices when planning a budget for a vacation?  

Learning Objective:  

Students will use real-world math skills to create a vacation budget. They will employ addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and estimation. Students will research costs, compare prices, and present a realistic budget plan.

Task

You and your team will work together to create a narrated PowerPoint presentation for a dream vacation with a budget of $5,000. You need to include:

A destination, which can be anywhere in the U.S.

Transportation

Hotel or accommodation

Food expenses

Activities and entertainment

A pie chart or bar graph showing how your money was spent

A final total that shows whether you stayed within budget.

Form a Group (4 Students per Group):  

Assign roles:  

Travel Planner: Finds options for transportation and accommodation.  

Activity Director: Chooses sightseeing and entertainment.  

Meal Manager: Plans daily food expenses.  

Budget Analyst: Tracks total costs and prepares the graph.

Create a Budget Sheet:  

Use a spreadsheet or paper chart to list your expenses.  

Math Time!

Add narration using voiceover tools or record in class.  

Include visuals and your spending graph.  

Practice and Present
