How do I prepare for the writing portion of the TNReady exam?

Introduction

There are three different modes of writing on the TNReady exam. Throughout this WebQuest, take notes of how to execute the correct mode of writing and how to respond to the prompt properly. 

Task

Based on the three modes of writing (opinion/argumentative, informational, narrative) construct a 5 paragraph essay answering the prompt. 

Process
  1. Opinion/Argument Writing: Overview
    1. Purpose: Convince reader of a position
    2. Takes a clear stance on an issue

    3. Supports claims with evidence

    4. Uses logical reasoning

    5. Ends with strong conclusion

    6. Format: 

      1. Intro: Hook: Interesting fact or question. Background info if needed. Claim: What do you believe? (Your argument)

      2. Body Paragraphs 2-4:  Sentence 1 - Topic sentence. Evidence . Explanation - What does this mean? . Transition

      3. Conclusion: Restate your claim . Summarize your reasons . End with a strong, final thought

         

  2. Informational 
    1. Purpose: Inform or explain topic

    2. Presents facts objectively

    3. Uses clear organization

    4. Includes relevant details

    5. Explains relationships/connections

    6. Maintains neutral tone

    7. Format:

      1. Intro: Hook: Interesting fact or question. Background info.

      2. Body Paragraphs 2-4:  Sentence 1 - Topic sentence. Evidence . Explanation - What does this mean? . Transition

  3. Narrative

    1. Purpose: Tell a story

      1. Real or imagined experiences

      2. Develops characters

      3. Creates setting

      4. Shows plot development

      5. Uses descriptive details

      6. Format 

        1. Exposition

          1. Engaging opening

          2. Setting establishment

          3. Character introduction

        2. Climax

          1. Pivotal moment happens 

          2. Characters have DIALOGUE

        3. Resolution 

          1. The pivotal moment resolves itself and the story ends

Evaluation

Write an argumentative essay comparing and contrasting how the two passages explore

banning cell phones in schools. Develop your essay by providing textual evidence

from both passages.



 Manage your time carefully so that you can:

 • plan your essay and do some prewriting using your scratch paper.

 • write your essay on the Google doc.



  Be sure to:

 • use evidence from both passages. 

• avoid over-relying on one passage. 



Your written response should be in the form of a multi-paragraph argumentative essay.
