Identifying and Writing Algebraic Expressions of Addition and Subtraction

Introduction

Objective: When students are given a mathematical or real-world context, they must be able to translate written descriptions into algebraic expressions of subtraction and addition, and vice versa.

Guiding Questions:

  1. Can I formulate algebraic expressions of addition and subtraction?
  2. Can I evaluate key words to translate them?
  3. Can I distinguish the difference between addition and subtraction expressions?
  4. Can I apply the rules of identification for translation?
  5. Can I describe this process to others?
  6. Can I remember the key words and rules of application and translation?

Task

Your task is to get in groups and prepare original example questions with answers to demonstrate knowledge on this subject.

Process

Students must have two notecards and one sheet of paper, each labeled with their name and date.

Process for this project is as follows:

  1. Students must find and get in groups of 4.
  2. Independently, each student must prepare their own original question and answer for that question. Question and answer on separate note cards and must be turned over once done. Students will have 5 minutes to finish, I will let you know when there's 1 minute left.
  3. Afterwards everyone in the group will swap note cards (only the question) with another. The timer will then begin for 3 minutes to answer it on a sheet of paper.
  4. This will repeat until everyone has answered every question from every person in their group.
  5. Students will use the remaining 8 minutes to discuss and correct each other's answers. Make corrections below your own answers.
Evaluation

Students will be evaluated on the following:

  • How well did they come up with a proper example question. Did they recall key words to develop a mathematical description that can be translated?
  • Was their answer to their question properly assembled and created? Did they translate it correctly?
  • How well did they answer other student's questions? Did they examine and investigate how to rewrite their questions?
  • Did each student discuss with their classmates? Did they make corrections or help others on how to answer them?
Conclusion

This project will challenge students to recall and create their own questions by applying pre-knowledge, prepare the correct answer, test themselves by answering other original questions that each student created, and discuss with other students on questions/answers while correcting them.
