Introduction

The first African mask can be traced back to the Palaeolithic times and many of them can be viewed in museums and art galleries in various parts of the world. These masks were used to represent religious and cultural occasions.

By the end of this WebQuest, you will have a good understanding of different masks and be able to create your own mask. In order to facilitate these two goals, you will have to complete the following tasks: 1) Examine Websites pertaining to African Masks
2)Peruse through sample masks and pictures
3) Create your own mask |
Process

1. First, you'll divide into groups of three-five (3-5). One persom from each group will go get the crayons, one person wil go get the masks, and one person will look up the masks and everybody in the group will chose what mask the whole group will be doing.
2. After forming your groups and given roles to play, look at the following websites and answer the questions that follow:

4. Now that you have an understanding of what African Masks are, your next task is to examine some African Masks. Click on the following link and as you go through each sample Masks, make a note of the colors and the facial signs of each mask.

5. Now that you have a good understanding of African Masks and have had the opportunity to examine samples, your final task is to create your own mask. You will all present your mask to the class on Wednesday May 21, 2014. Your mask will be assessed using the attached scoring rubric.
