Introduction

Year 8 Civics & Citizenship Webquest created by Phebe Wong
Task
You have learnt that Australia is a democratic country and this means that Australian citizens have certain freedoms, privileges and responsibilities.
You will work in pairs to find out what these freedoms, privileges and responsibilities are. The sources used in this webquest can be used again for your assignment.
You have 40 minutes to complete the 'Process' part. Once the 40 minutes has ended, we will come back together as class to complete the 'Evaluation' part.
Process
Answer the following questions:
1. What do the following freedoms mean:
a) Freedom of assembly
b) Freedom of association
c) Freedom of movement
d) Freedom of religion
e) Freedom of speech (opinion and expression)
Write down a definition for each freedom. Use either of the websites to find a definition and record the website you used for the definition.
http://www.ag.gov.au/RightsAndProtections/HumanRights/PublicSectorGuida…
Under the heading 'Guidance sheet topics', find the relevant fact sheet:
https://www.humanrights.gov.au/rights-and-freedoms-right-right-0#CPR
Under the heading 'Civil and political rights', find the relevant fact sheet.
2. a) Which document are these freedoms found in? And where in the document are these freedoms found? Use the above websites.
b) Find a website with a copy of the document and record the website you used.
3. What are citizens' responsibilities? Use this website:
http://www.citizenship.gov.au/should_become/
4. What are citizens' privileges? Use this website:
http://www.citizenship.gov.au/should_become/
5. a) What appears in both responsibilities and privileges? Why do you think it does?
b) Find a website which says it is a responsibility and/or privilege.
Evaluation
1. Now, we will go through the answers as a class.
2. Together, we will assess the sources' reliability with this table:
| Source | Who wrote it? | When was it written? | Is there any bias? | How reliable do you think it is on a scale of 1-10? |
3. Reflect
How did you go in the webquest? What was easy? What was hard? Any questions?
Conclusion
Congratulations! You have now finished the webquest.
You now know what your freedoms, privileges and responsibilities are as Australian citizens!
Get ready for the next lesson where we will see how freedoms are used in Australia's democracy.
