Comparing Where We Live!

Introduction

Learning geography can be fun and exciting! Its a good way to see how people across the country or United States live in such different ways than we do. There are places around the earth that have warm weather all the time and some places that have winter weather all the time! Wouldn't that be such a different way of living for all of us? Today we will learn about different places and what it is like to live there.

Prepared Graduates: (Click on a Prepared Graduate Competency to View Articulated Expectations)

Evidence Outcomes 21st Century Skill and Readiness Competencies

Students Can:

  1. Compare and contrast how people live in different settings around the world (DOK 1-2)
  2. Give examples of food, clothing, and shelter and how they change in different environments (DOK 1-2)

Nature Of:

Task

Today in class we are learning more about world geography. We will finish a Webquest to help us understand what it might be like to live in a different state or country.

Process

Step 1: Think about what living in Colorado is like. Think about the weather and possibly some things that are around fort collins. For example, we have mountains to the west, the mountains are pretty and in the mountains we can go hiking, skiing, and camping.

Step 2: Now we are going to take a look at Hawaii and see if living in Hawaii would be different than Colorado. Please watch this and then discuss with your neighbor on what might be different about living in Hawaii than Colorado. Think about the weather and what different activities people living there might do.

Step 3: Now were are going to see what it would be like to live in a different country such as Italy. Please watch this video:   and discuss with your other neighbor about what might be different about living in Italy instead of Colorado.

Step 4: Now we are going to look at the world as a whole and put together a jigsaw puzzle of what the world map looks like. Please complete this puzzle: http://www.learninggamesforkids.com/geography_games/random_games/world-…

Step 5: Now that you have seen what another state is like, and also another country talk to your neighbor about a place that you have visited that you really enjoyed or a place that you would like to visit with your family.

Step 6: For homework go home and talk to your parents about the place that you thought of and do a little research on it with them. Please bring in a picture of the place and also a little bit of information on this place. This information should include: The location (what is it by), what the weather is like, and how long it would take you to get there.

Completed videos Student did not watch the videos. Student watched half of the videos. Students watched the videos.  Students watched the video and could provide information about them to the whole class when the video was over.
Conclusion

Hopefully after this Webquest you have found that people in different states and countires live very differently than we do. There are many reasons for the ways that we live differently but most importantly it is based off of the location. The weather can change how we live and also attractions can change how we live our lives.
