Propagating Propaganda

Introduction

You will be reading either Night by Elie Wiesel or Maus I by Art Spiegelman. While reading these novels in class, we will use the web to find historical videos, documents or artifacts that will give us background of reasoning that lead to the events in the two books. This will help us gain a deeper understanding of the novel, the time period, and the authors. We will specifically look at how propaganda techniques were used for the Nazi's purpose of singling out the Jewish people.

Task

 

Through this project you will discover what propaganda is and how it can be used.

Your tasks are the following:

1. Discover propaganda- you will need to find a sturdy definition and study the different techniques, you may use Word to document your notes, research the techniques: bandwagon, plain folks, scapegoating, name calling, and transfer.

2. Pick one technique of propaganda- you will choose one of the five techniques of propaganda discussed and find primary sources for each one

                            *This could be pictures, photographs, speeches, videos etc.

                            *It must be from the 1930-1940s time frame studied

3. Using your chosen technique- after you find your articles of propaganda, you will write an essay on how the techniques used in your found examples could have been used to ignite the events that the characters were subjected to in Night and Maus I

4. 5 minute presentation- you will make a 5 minute presentation on your selected technique of propaganda, the articles you found, and your own conclusion/thoughts about the book you selected and the time period

3. Write an essay from this topic: How were specific propaganda techniques used to foster the political aims of the Nazis in Germany before and during World War II and the Holocaust?

4. Create a 5 minute presentation with the following requirements:

-Must be 5 minutes long

-Must have a visual aid

-You must state the book you chose and the propaganda technique you chose

-You must present your data

-Give your opinion on the book and how the artifacts you found were used to push an agenda

-Concluding, debrief your thoughts on the chosen book, what you found, the time period, etc.
