Secondary Colors

Introduction

Students should learn that red, blue, and yellow are primary colors and that green, orange, and purple are secondary colors. Students should understand that you can make secondary colors by mixing two primary colors.

Task

Over the next few days, we will learn the names of our primary colors: red, yellow, blue and secondary colors: orange, purple, green. We will aslo learn how to make our secondary colors from our primary colors.

You should all know by the end of lesson how to:

  • Name your primary and secondary colors
  • Match the word to the color
  • Make your secondary colors from your primary colors
Process

Day 1:

Make a poster with the children to display all the colors by matching the color with the correct name.

Here's an example on how to present and name the colors with your studnets: by pointing at the colors before you start your poster.

Color the coloring sheet with the studnets, say the colors name for what crayons they need to color.

 Day Two:

Return back to the poster for the classroom.

The coloring sheet of squares will be needed, the children will already have this on their desk.

Look at the poster and show how the secondary colors are made. Explain that they are going to coloring the page vertically, meaning up and down.

  • Start with top left sqare. Color it red.
  • Move the square below it. Color it yellow.
  • Move to the bottom square. Color it orange.

Talk with the children about how they look down the column of red and yellow and see that together they make orange.

The prosses will be repeated for the next two sets of rows.

  • Color the top square red.
  • Color the next square blue.
  • Color the bottom square purple.

Talk about how red and blue make purple.

Move to the last set of squares.

  • Color the top square blue.
  • Color the next square yellow.
  • Color the bottom square green.

Talk about how blue and yellow make green.

Day 3:

Today, an activity will be done with the children. Colored water is going to be used to show them how a primary color mixes with another primary color to make a scondary color.
