Where Shall We Go?

Introduction

Introduction

Our class is organising a 5-day-trip to the United Kingdom at the end of the school year. There are lots of interesting places there. However, we can visit only two cities. We need your help to decide which cities to visit.

Task

You are going to work in groups of two and only two (unless we have an odd number)

The Preside has proposed six cities which are interesting in terms of culture, history and tourist attractions: London, Edinburgh, Manchester, Liverpool, Oxford, Cardiff, and Dublin.

Remember, it is a 5-day-trip and we can visit only two cities. Each group will find information about two cities. You will have to refer to the culture and history of each city as well as its tourist attractions. Then, each group will create a Prezi presentation of their proposed trip and present it to the class. In the end, the class is going to decide which proposal seems the most interesting. Then, each student will write a letter stating which two cities they would most like to visit and why.

Process

Step 1

Do a quick internet search of the cities and decide with your partner which two you think would be the most interesting. Remember that all your websites and information must be in English.

Step 2

Each group will have to find information about the two cities in the UK. You may both work together and look at the cities together, or you may decide to have one look up information on one city while your partner works on the other city. You will take notes on the historical, cultural, and tourist attractions that you find as well as save the photos. The photos you will save to your computer, but the notes you will write on the handout provided. (This is because I am evil and know that you will just cut and paste otherwise.) You may also watch short videos about each city as long as they are in English.

Find information about all of the following:

1. Find places of interest to visit (museums, art galleries, parks, castles and palaces, town halls, cathedrals and important churches, theatres and opera houses).

2. Find the best hotels to stay in.

3. Find restaurants to eat at and briefly describe the kind of food provided or highlights of the menu.

4. Find cultural events at the beginning of June  (time of our visit).

Evaluation

You will be evaluated in the following ways:

  • Followed directions correctly.
  • Resolved problems quickly.
  • Treated each other with respect.

Your final grade will be calculated by taking the average score from each criteria above.

Conclusion

The purpose of this project is to practice and improve your proficiency in English, to learn how to work successfully in group projects, and to learn more about the United Kingdom. Ultimately, you would like the class to choose your proposal, but it is not necessary in order to receive a good grade.
