Why do animals live where they do?

Introduction

Introduction

What is a home?

A home is a safe place to live. Homes shelter animals from the weather, protect them from predators or enemies, provide them with a safe place to bear and raise their young, and sometimes even provide a place to store food. Homes serve these same purposes for human beings.

An animal's living place is called its habitat.
Different plants and animals require different living conditions to thrive, eg. goldfish need freshwater while whales, sea water.

Animals and plants are adapted to the conditions of the habitats in which they live. Most animals are only adapted to live in one or two habitats. A walrus could not live in a desert. A rattlesnake could not live for very long in the arctic.

Task

There has been a mix up at the zoo. The zoo keepers need your help to put the animals back in the correct habitat.  You will need to study the different types of habitats in order to know where the animals live.

1. Read about each of the types of habitats

2.Create a sign for each of the habitats

include the following information on each sign:

 What is the temperature?

 Where is it located?

What kind of plants live there?

 Draw a picture

The  information on the signs will be used to help students sort a list of animals into the correct habitat.

Evaluation

Conclusion

Students will gain an understanding of the types of habitats which animals live in. The students will be able to discuss and compare their findings with their peers. Students will publish and present their findings to the class in a formal presentation. Feedback will be given by their peers and teacher.
