5th Grade Analysis of Differing Perspectives

Introduction

Hello students in 5th grade! For tomorrow's lesson we will be exploring the different perspectives that people hold when speaking and writing about the same topics.

In the meantime please take a look at what we will be doing and watch the two videos and read the one article assigned!

Standard: KAS RI.5.6: Analyze MULTIPLE ACCOUNTS of the same event or topic, noting important similarities and differences in the PERSPECTIVE they represent.

Task

Final goal: Understand the perspectives that shape everyone's voice in different mediums of communication.

To complete this goal you will

  • Analyze the various opinions for a topic and two perspectives of the same event or topic, noting important similarities and differences in the perspective they represent.
  • Write two paragraphs on how the two accounts differ.
  • Take a quiz to demonstrate reading comprehension.
  • Present on a topic and identify your own perspective and how it differs from someone else.
Process

Analyze

Task 1: Watch this clip and think about what perspective about a doctor's visit is being portrayed here for kids.

Task 2: Watch the first minute of this real life example of going to the doctor and think about the perspective about doctors that is being portrayed here by the girl. Consider how to music and words might affect the perspective we perceive.

Respond

Task 1: Analyze the two perspectives represented in the previous two videos. Notes the similarities and differences in how they spoke about the subject of a doctor. Did one have a lighter tone and treat the subject of medicine more positively than the other? How did their point of view or attitude shape the content and feel of the video?

Task 2: Write two paragraphs of at least 4 sentences each describing the differences and similarities between the two perspectives shown in the videos.

Read

Task 1: Read the following website page detailing four opinions on the subject of fighting in hockey. Be able to describe how their opinions are different and affect the content and style of the writing.

https://www.procon.org/headlines/should-fighting-be-allowed-in-hockey-top-3-pros-cons/

Task 2: Participate in group discussion regarding opinions and perspectives in writing and media in class tomorrow.

Task 3: Complete a paper quiz that I will hand out in class tomorrow on the article to check comprehension of the article and how the opinions demonstrate differing perspectives in writing.

Present

(to be worked on in class)

Task 1: Pick one of the following topics that you are interested in.

  • School lunches
  • Snow days
  • Playing video games
  • Bedtime rules

Task 2: Think about your perspective and opinions about the subject and write a few notes down. Remember to think about how your perspective shapes the way you present a story or opinion. Tell this to your audience in your presentation.

Task 3: Consider what other opposite opinions that people might think and be ready to explain how your perspective differs from theirs.

Task 4: Practice your presentation this week at home to present on Thursday or Friday. It should be 2-3 minutes long and you can use notecards and a written speech so long as you don't read it word for word.

Conclusion

Congrats, students!

You now have analyzed and presented the perspectives of two differing opinions when writing or speaking on the same topic. We should all be aware that people have different perspectives and portray information differently depending on what they believe.

We need to treat each other with grace and kindness as we recognize how information is presented and always look for the truth!

Great job everyone!
