All About Dr. Seuss

Introduction

Have you ever heard of Dr. Seuss or read one of his silly poems?  Dr. Seuss is well-loved author of many silly children’s books.  You are going to be searching to find information about Dr. Seuss and some of the silly books that he has written for kids like you! You will also be looking at the unique characters that Dr. Seuss has created for his books

Task

You are going to be learning all kinds of great things about Dr. Seuss and his crazy creations.  You are going to be searching for facts and quotes and writing down the one’s that are most interesting to you.  Second, you will be looking through all of the books that Dr. Seuss has written.  Next, you will play a game called “A-maze-ing Green Eggs and Ham” where you must use tools to get the green egg around the maze to a ham.  Last, you see some of the silly characters that Dr. has created, and then you will be creating your own! 

Process

You will be working alone on this WebQuest, but feel free to ask your neighbors any questions that you may have.

  1. You will visit the websites provided and…
    1. Use this link (http://www.seussville.com/#/author) to explore Dr. Seuss’ office.  You will need to search his office and write FIVE facts about Dr. Seuss that you find interesting.  Make sure you look around the entire office and click on the links in the window in front of his desk. 
    2. Use this link (http://www.seussville.com/#/books) to explore all of the books written by Dr. Seuss.  You will be using the sheet of notebook paper that you wrote your facts on to make a list.  You list should include:

i.At least FOUR Dr. Seuss books that you have read before

ii.And at least FOUR Dr. Seuss books that you would like to read later. 

  1. Next, click this link (http://www.seussville.com/#/characters) to meet the silly characters that Dr. Seuss created.  After you see all of them, you will need a sheet of drawing paper to:

i.On one side of the paper, write TWO sentences about your favorite Dr. Seuss character.  Be sure to include their name.

ii.On the other side of the paper, create your very own character.  Draw a picture of your character and color it.  After you finish your drawing, write TWO sentences telling about your character.  Be sure to include what you named it.

  1. Now, click this link (http://www.seussville.com/#/games) to play the “A-maze-ing Green Eggs and Ham” game.  Please click “How to Play” before playing the game.  The purpose of the game is to put the tools in the right places to get the green egg around the silly maze to meet the ham.

Purpose:

            The “All About Dr. Seuss WebQuest” is intended to support student learning in a variety of ways. First, the WebQuest encourages students to get inspired by the creative works of others and create something of their own, no matter how “silly” it is.  A second purpose for this WebQuest is to educate students on the lives and works of famous authors.  Finally, the WebQuest encourages students to be active producers rather than passive receivers, which is an important skill to have in life.

 

Rationale:

            Building an understanding of how to examine the life of one of the most loved children’s authors.  This also encouraging students to be creative and imaginative and making their ideas come to life on paper.

 

Learner Description:

            This WebQuest is appropriate for West Virginia students in the second grade beginning to study the lives of authors and their most famous works. 

 

Prerequisites:

            Students embarking on the “All About Dr. Seuss WebQuest” should demonstrate the following:

  • Basic Internet navigation skills
  • Reading on a late first grade or second grade level
  • General understanding of how to help others when they are in need

 

Instructional Objectives:

            Upon completion of this WebQuest, students will have the ability to:

  • Create a list and write complete sentences with readable handwriting
  • Create an informative list using facts
  • Navigate their way around a web page
  • Write their opinion and state their reasons
  • Use information from illustrations to demonstrate understanding of characters

Introduction: In this section, students will be given an overview of their activity of using seussville.com to find information.

Task: On this page, there will be an outline of what is expected of the students as they go through the WebQuest.

Process: This page consists of the steps that the students will take to successfully complete the WebQuest along with the resources that they will be using.

Evaluation: This is the rubric that will be used to grade the students’ work.

Conclusion: This page consists of closing remarks for the students along with an additional question for them to think about.

 

Assessment:

The product of this WebQuest for students includes a handwritten list of facts about Dr. Seuss and a list of books, a drawing of their own with a handwritten description, and an opinion statement on their favorite Dr. Seuss character.  Students will be assessed on how much of the assignment they have complete.
