Introduction
Have you ever been to a baseball game and ever wondered who the best hitter or who the best pitcher is? Well now you can find out for yourself. You and two other classmates must work together to find a baseball team and calculate the batting average of at least nine hitters and the earned run average of three pitchers. You can choose any baseball team you like (high school, college, or pro). At the end of this you must submit a scratch paper with the work shown of three hitters and three pitchers on how you came up with your answers. You will also have to have either a printed out copy of the averages and ERA or written neatly on paper.

The student, by the end of this lesson, should be able to calculate: batting average and earned runs average (ERA) for their baseball team of choice. - Students are able to choose any baseball team they want. (MLB, College, High School, etc...)
- The measurable learning objectives is calculation and peer communication.
Process
- First you will need to choose a baseball team/roster.
- www.MLB.com has professional rosters and stats.
- If you want college, you can search college baseball on google as well! To find the equations for averages you may search on the web as well.
- You need to find the number of hits and at bats by players and the innings pitched and runs given up by pitchers.
- You will use that information to plug into the equations to figure out the averages and the earned runs average.
Evaluation
You will be evaluated on your team work, and your individual efforts. You can decide who is in charge of what, but everyone is to participate. When you are complete you must turn in a written copy of your scratch paper with at least 3 hitters average and 3 pitchers ERA. You will show me the work you have done to find the current averages so I am able to grade you. Lastly, you will hand in a total roster ( 9 players and 3 pitcher) printed out of all of their averages or ERA's.
Conclusion
This task should give students a challenge on math and searching the web. Teamwork is included along with communication skill. By the end of this, students should be able to navigate and search the web and be able to learn how to calculate averages.
GOOD LUCK! Have FUN!
Teacher Page
This task is created for a statistics class for grades 11 and up. This is to use higher level thinking to calculate averages. This also helps build teamwork and bettering communication skill amongst other class mates. Also, it creates some kids to come out of their comfort level with working with sports if they do not like them so much. Overall this is a challenging, but fun exercise to use higher level thinking.
