Introduction
Real Life Story;
Eboku's dilema.
Eboku and his sister don't live with their parents in their home village in Uganda. They live in a camp nearby where there is a school. They only see their mum twice a week when she comes to visit them. Eboku's mum has a life long virus, and his dad died when he was just six. Eboku is torn between looking after his mum and looking after his own future by getting an education.
What should Eboku do?
How can Eboku get an education and look after his mum?
Task
What should ...... do?
Your task is ...
Use the global gang website to prepare a presentation which introduces your classmates to the story of one child who lives in very poor conditions. Your presentation should help them to;
- Imagine what it would be like to be that person
- Identify some things that would help that person
- Understand what Christian aid is doing to help and
- Say why Christians want to help people in need
Follow the steps .. step 1 ... step 2.. step 3.
Process
Step 1 - One person's story
Use the Christian Aid Global Gang Website (www.globalgang.org.uk) to find and read stories of children in very poor conditions in different parts of the world today.
- Type in the web address then go to stories, click on each story to find out what has happened to each child.
- With a partner, choose one story to think and talk about.
- Ask yourselves, What if that were me?
- Talk about the following, making notes of your ideas on the paper provided;
If I was ........................... (name of child in story)
The worst thing in my life would be ....
the best thing in my life would be ......
I would need ....
I would want .....
I would feel ......
I would wonder............
- Create a poster or a powerpoint to present the story and your ideas to the class. Think about ways you could design this to make it more interesting for the reader. Do you want to give it an original heading and include a photograph of the person whose story it is? Do you want to use speech bubbles to show your thoughts? Do you want to include questions for your audience to think about?
Step 2 - What can done to help?
- Return to the website (globalgang)
- Find and list some practical things Christian Aid does to help people like those in the stories on the website.
- Add a slide to your powerpoint about this.
Step 3 - Why should people who follow Jesus care about people who are poor?
- Christian aid puts into practise the teachings of Jesus. Read one of the things Jesus said about helping people in need.
- Go to the bible gateway (www.biblegateway.com)
- Type in Matthew 6:2-3 and choose from the drop down menu - Contemporary English Version.
- Highlight the text and copy into your presentation - create a catchy slogan or newspaper report to sum up what Jesus is saying here.
Evaluation
Level 3 - WALT
I can put myself in someone elses shoes, identify what a person needs and suggest how these needs might be met.
I can describe some things Jesus said about caring for others, give some examples of how Christians put this into practise today and say how this makes a difference in other people's lives.
