Introduction
Objective:
Students will learn about how plants and animals depend on their surroundings and other living things to meet their needs.
Essential Questions:
- Why do animals and plants live in different habitats?
- What are the different ways that organisms depend on the environment to survive?
- What are some different ways that organisms depend on each other to survive?
- Why is it important to know how many species there are in an area?

Congratulations! You and your classmates have been chosen to research a MAJOR problem in our country. The bees in our world are in danger. We need you to learn more about why they are in danger. Then we need you to help us come up with different ideas on how to help bring back the bee population in our world. The Earth needs your help!

Task
1. You will learn about the relationships between plants
and animals in different habitats.
- temperate/alpine forest
- grassland
- tropical forest (jungle)
- ocean
2. You will learn about the things all plants and animals need to survive.
3. You will design a plan to save the bees!
Process
First...
In your science notebook, there is a chart for you to complete on page 1.
Go to this website and fill out the chart in your notebook about the different biomes.
If you have a little extra time, there are blank boxes on the back. Pick another biome and fill in what you learn!
Next...
Click on the following link and listen and watch the read aloud called The Dandelion Seed by Joseph Anthony.
Remember to be looking for ways that the dandelion supported the animals around it.
While you watch and listen, fill out the chart on page 3 in your science notebook.
Then...
Click on the link below and watch the video to learn more about how different animals can change the environment.
How did wolves help Yellowstone National Park?
While you watch the video, jot down what you notice or observe in your science notebook on page 4.
If you have any questions, you should write them down too!
*Remember to ask questions about who, what, where, when, why, and how.*
Finally...
Have you heard what is happening now in our world? Bees are dying really, really fast! Here is a web that shows the relationship bees have with the rest of the plants and animals in their habitat.
On page 5 in your science notebooks, answer the following questions:
1. What is one thing that would happen if the bee population became extinct?
Use complete sentences or draw pictures to explain.
2. How could humans help to increase the bee population?
Use complete sentences or draw pictures to explain.

Evaluation
Criteria for Success
What do you need to do to meet with success? Use this as your checklist to make sure that you have completed all of the necessary work. There is a copy of this checklist in your science notebook as well.
A: Identify the location, temperature, plants, animals, and fun facts about each of the 4 biomes listed.
B: List 3 ways the dandelion supported the animals around it.
C: List 2 things you noticed/observed while watching the video.
D: List 2 things you wondered about while watching the video.
E: Describe 1 thing that could happen if bees became extinct.
F: Describe a plan for how humans can help the bee population increase.

Conclusion
Congratulations on finishing your webquest!
Hopefully you have learned a lot about how the plants and animals in our worlds interact with and depend on one another.
Some very bad things could happen if we ever allow an animal or a plant to go extinct.
I look forward to seeing you try out your plan to help keep our bee population safe!
