Introduction
There are many things in life that need to follow a specific order. In order to have clean clothes, you need to first put the dirty laundry into the washing machine, then add detergent and turn on the machine
. Another example would be to drive a car. You do not just sit in a car and all of a sudden are on your way to your destination. There is a process of starting the car in order to move.
Can you think of other things in your life that require order? During this webquest, you will learn the correct order when evaluating expressions and find real world examples.
Task
You are going to evaluate expressions by following the order of operations to reach the correct solution. Throughout this webquest, you will take a pre- and post-test, review the order of operations from fifth grade, watch and learn about the importance of exponents, and create a presentation analyzing a problem and solution. Along the way, you will practice each skill through the use of online resources, games, warm-ups, and in-class activities.
Essential Questions: 1. What properties and conventions to I need to understand in order to simplify and evaluate algebraic expressions?2. How are exponents useful in solving mathematical and real world problems? 3. How are properties of numbers helpful in computation?

Process
TASK 1:
- Before we get started, you need to take the Evaluating Expressions pre-test. (http://www.socrative.com/; login as a student; join classroom- Borders)
- You will first need a copy of the Evaluating Expressions Webquest Answer Document. You may either print one yourself (found at the bottom of this page) or get a copy from your teacher.
- To complete this step, find a partner. You will both go to www.mathisfun.com/order-of-operations-PEMDAS/. Read the lesson aloud in its entirety and complete 1-3 on your answer document.
TASK 2:Your teacher will assign you a letter to follow for the remainder of the webquest. When you see your letter in bold, complete the activity that aligns with that letter.
- A:You will play a game where you need to choose the correct operations. http://www.softschools.com/math/order_of_operations/games/
- B/C: Finally, go to http://www.ixl.com/math/grade-5/simplify-expressions-using-order-of-operations-and-parentheses. Complete 5 practice problems and record how many you got right out of 5 for #6 on your answer document.
- Login in to your MobyMax account and go to the math section. Complete the next assigned lesson on your account (it will be either the order of operations or exponents. If that is not the lesson you are working on, let your teacher know.)
- After you complete your lesson, you are to complete an exit ticket for the day. Either print out the exit ticket for task 2 found at the bottom of the page OR get a copy from your teacher.
TASK 3: *Materials needed to complete task 3: HEADPHONES.
- Watch the Introduction to Exponents video.
- After watching the video, practice exponents by playing the game, Alien Powers. http://www.ezschool.com/play/796. Set a timer for 5 minutes and see how many aliens you can get home before the timer goes off. Record your score at each level on #7 of your answer document.
**If the level you are assigned is too difficult, practice at an easier level and then try your assigned level again.**
A: You will complete level 1. B: You will complete level 2. C: You will complete level 3.
- With a partner, you will complete the Order of Operation Scramble game. The teacher will provide you with the resources needed for today. The resources that will be used today, can also be found under the resources tab.
A:You will be given a problem that you need to evaluate. You will use the placemat and dry erase markers to help you. B: You will be given a set of problems that have numbers, solutions, and operations. You need to choose where the parentheses belong in order to reach the correct solution. C: You will be given a set of numbers, the exponents used, and the solution. You will rearrange the problems on your placemat until you are able to reach the correct solution. At the end of class, return all of your materials to your teacher. TASK 4: 1. To begin the day, you will complete a short warm-up that reviews both the order of operations and exponents. This can be found at the bottom of the page titled "Day 4 Warm-Up"OR your teacher can provide you a copy. 2. Find the Error! With a partner, you are going to create a Google Presentation.Directions:
https://docs.google.com/a/kentoncityschools.org/presentation/d/1ZfxcIxDTcIYYb-s3MdoM7cjeqXjwlVRpKGWcTa3px0Y/edit?usp=sharingSlide 1: Title your presentation "Find the Error" and include both of your names. Slide 2: Choose one of the following problems: Copy the problem to slide 2. On this slide you will also explain what the error is in the problem. Slide 3: Copy the problem to this slide, but now show the correct solution. You need to list step by step instructions on how to solve the problem correctly. Share your presentation with your teacher via Google Drive. You will present your presentation to the class when all are complete. TASK 5: 1. Take the Evaluating Expressions Post-test (Found at www.socrative.com; login as student; classroom; Borders) 2. After you finish your post-test, you have 15 minutes with your partner to make any last minute adjustments to your presentation and prepare to present it to the group. 3. Teacher Page
Created for 6th grade math students aligned with the Common Core State Standards.
Standards:
5.OA.A.1 Use parentheses, brackets, or braces in numerical expressions, and evaluate expressions with these symbols.
6.EE.1 Write and evaluate exponents involving whole-number exponents.
6.EE.2b Identify parts of an expression using mathematical terms (sum, term, product, factor, quotient, coefficient); view one or more parts of an expression as a single entity.
Prior Knowledge: Students should be familiar with the order of operations from grade 5. Students will continue to practice the order of operations, but now they will need to be able to evaluate exponents as well. Students should also have fair computer skills and be able to navigate different websites.
Process: Students will work independently, as well as collaboratively. This webquest requires students to show their knowledge of evaluting expressions by creating graphic organizers, evaluate problems, find solutions, play games, and watch videos. Students will also need to create a presentation and present to the group.
Evaluation: Students will be evaluated using the teacher-created rubric found under the evaluation tab. Students wil also be evaluated by the progress that was made from the pre- to the post-test.
