The Search for the Perfect Ice Cream

Introduction

You work for an old fashioned ice cream factory. The new supervisor for your team has decided that old fashioned ice cream might not be the best marketing strategy. Your task is to determine whether your company should make ice cream the old fashioned way, or should your factory reconsider its method of making ice cream? Perhaps there is a more efficient method or popular type of ice cream (soft serve, dippin dots, etc)...

Task

Presentation Task:

1)     Your team will present to the Board of Directors of your company your recommended approach to ice cream making.

2)     You will create a PowerPoint/Prezi presentation that identifies the method of ice cream making that you propose the company should maintain/adopt. Will you keep making old fashioned ice cream? Or will you research and proposed a different way of making ice cream?

3)     Your presentation must include the science behind ice cream making including how Kinetic Theory and states of matter have helped you determine the most effective ice cream making method.

4)     Each person in your group is required to speak during the presentation and answer questions at the end of the presentation. You will be evaluated based on your individual contribution as well as the overall presentation by the group. Please refer to the rubric on the back of this sheet for requirements of the group and individuals.

5)     Presentations should be 3-5 minutes in length.

6)     Helpful hints for getting the best presentation grade possible:

  • Do not read off of your slides. Make notecards to help you remember what to say. We (the audience) are capable of reading the slides on our own. You should be sharing additional examples or further explanation of what we can read on the screen.
  • Slides should not contain font size smaller than 20.
  • More slides with less text per slide is better than less slides with more text.
  • Use pictures to help your audience “see” what you are talking about.
  • Always cite your sources (information AND images) – citations can be on the slide or at the end in a bibliography. A simple list of the websites and the date you accessed them is fine. Otherwise, its plagiarism and/or copyright infringement. Which is illegal.
  • No Wikipedia for this project. Ask if you are unsure if a source is reliable.

7)     The suggested format: slide 1) company name/logo, 2) company background info, 3) science of how to make ice cream (kinetic theory applied to ice cream), 4) what method do you choose – old fashioned or other? 5) if other method - explain new method and how it works 6) why you chose your method - adv/disadv of your ice cream making method 7) CITATIONS/SOURCES

Process

Choose one of the following methods of making ice cream: old-fashioned, soft-serve, or flash-frozen. Next, on your handout from class, research the questions for only the type you chose.
