What's the MATTER?

Introduction

What's the Matter?

This is a webquest about Matter...

Task

One day Ann and Susan were over at Rose's house and were happily eating Ice Cream...

When they noticed something peculiar...

They noticed that the ICE CREAM was dripping...

Rose said," Look, the ice cream is melting!"

Anna answered,"Why do you think it is melting? It was so hard and almost hard to break a minute ago..."

Susan said," I asked my brother about that and he said it was all about MATTER."

"Whats the MATTER?" Rose asked.

Susan said, "Not that kind of matter. M-A-T-T-E-R."

Anna said,"I don't know what that is, let's check the internet and find out what that is.."

So the three of them searched the net.

Process

Anna, Susan and Rose opened the web browser google chrome and searched MATTER in the internet... A couple of websites showed up...

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mattersimple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matterwww.chem4kids.com/files/matter_intro.htmlwww.nyu.edu/pages/mathmol/textbook/whatismatter.html"So what should we do?" Rose asked."Let's click one and read on..." said Anna.So they opened the first link and it said...The common definition of matter is anything that has mass and volume (occupies space). The four states of matter are:
SOLIDSolid is one of the four fundamental states of matter (the others being liquidgas, and plasma). It is characterized by structural rigidity and resistance to changes of shape or volume. Unlike a liquid, a solid object does not flow to take on the shape of its container, nor does it expand to fill the entire volume available to it like a gas does. The atoms in a solid are tightly bound to each other, either in a regular geometric lattice (crystalline solids, which include metals and ordinary ice) or irregularly (anamorphous solid such as common window glass).LIQUIDLiquid is one of the four fundamental states of matter (the others being solidgas, and plasma), and is the only state with a definite volume but no fixed shape. A liquid is made up of tiny vibrating particles of matter, such as atoms, held together by intermolecular bonds. Water is, by far, the most common liquid on Earth. Like a gas, a liquid is able to flow and take the shape of a container. GAS Gas is one of the four fundamental states of matter (the others being solidliquid, and plasma). A pure gas may be made up of individual atoms (e.g. a noble gas or atomic gas like neon), elemental molecules made from one type of atom (e.g. oxygen), or compound molecules made from a variety of atoms (e.g. carbon dioxide). PLASMAPlasma (from Greek πλάσμα, "anything formed"[1]), according to natural science, is one of the four fundamental states of matter (the others being solidliquid, and gas). When air or gas is ionized, plasma forms with conductive properties similar to those of metals. Plasma is the most abundant form of matter in the Universe, because most stars are in a plasma state.

Evaluation

"So that's what matter is!!!", Rose said.

"Wow... I still don't understand why ice cream melts," she continued.

"It melts because of HEAT. More specifically, Heat Energy. You see... Energy is needed to change one state of matter to another..." Anna explained.

Here look at this graph:

"I think I understand now... Ice Cream melts because heat was added and since ice cream is a solid when added to heat it becomes a liquid." Rose explained.

"That's right!" Anna said.

"Now let's see what would happen to these objects if heat was added." Anna asked.

"If you could answer this... you can eat this!!" Anna said...

"Wow! Ice Cream!", both of them said together so they all tried to asnwer it the best they can...

Conclusion

It was a day full of suprises and good things for Anna, Rose and Susan.

So what did we learn today??

Objects that take up space and have mass are called matter. Everything around you is made up of matter. Chocolate cake is made up of matter. You are made of matter.

If you are having trouble understanding matter, look all around you. You can see matter makes up the walls of your house and your classroom. Matter is large and matter is small. Do you get it yet?

Solids

The wood block is solid. A solid has a certain size and shape. The wood block does not change size or shape. Other examples of solids are the computer, the desk, and the floor.

You can change the shape of solids. You change the shape of sheets of lumber by sawing it in half or burning it.

From wood to

How might you change the shape of a piece of gum?

Liquids

Milk is a liquid. Milk is liquid matter. It has a size or volume. Volume means it takes up space. But milk doesn't have a definite shape. It takes the shape of its container.

Liquids can flow, be poured, and spilled. Did you ever spill juice? Did you notice how the liquid goes everywhere and you have to hurry and wipe it up? The liquid is taking the shape of the floor and the floor is expansive limitless boundary (until it hits the wall). You can't spill a wooden block. You can drop it and it still has the same shape.

What about jello and peanut butter?

You can spread peanut butter on bread, but peanut butter does not flow. It is not a liquid at room temperature. You have to heat peanut butter up to make it a liquid. When you or your mom makes jello, it is first a liquid. You have to put it in the refrigerator so that it becomes a solid. These are yummy forms of matter with properties of a liquid and a solid.

Gases

Run in place very fast for a minute. Do you notice how hard you are breathing? What you are breathing is oxygen? You need oxygen to live. That's why you can only hold your breath for a certain amount of time.

You can't see oxygen. It's invisible. It is a gas. A gas is matter that has no shape or size of its own. Gases have no color.

Gases are all around you. You can feel gas when the wind blows. The wind is moving air. Air is many gases mixed together.

Plasma

The newest phase of matter is Plasma. Not much is known about this phase except it is like gas but is electrically charged.
