Cellular Mitosis

Introduction

WELCOME BIOLOGY STUDENTS!

The purpose of this WebQuest is to familiarize the four stages of Mitosis, the process by which somatic cells divide and make copies of themselves. Cellular mitosis is important for growth and to replace worn out cells and tissues.

For your assessment, you will be required to sketch the locations of major structures for each of the four stages of mitosis. Watch the videos closely, and have fun!

Task

TASK 1: Take this Mitosis Pre-Quiz: https://www.quizbiology.com/2013/05/biology-quiz-on-mitosis.html

  • For any incorrect answers, write down the general concept you will want to clarify throughout the other WebQuest learning activities.

TASK 2: Watch this animation on the phases of MITOSIS:

TASK 3: Play the Mitosis Mover! Interactive Game: https://biomanbio.com/HTML5GamesandLabs/Genegames/mitosismoverpage.html

  • For any incorrect answers, make sure you take notes as you build on your learning.
Evaluation

For your assessment, you are to complete the following and bring to next class:

Draw 5 pictures of a sample cell undergoing MITOSIS. For each diagram, the following components must be present

  • The NAME of the stage of mitosis clearly labeled
  • The LOCATION and ARRANGEMENT ("shape") of the DNA
  • Whether there are ONE or TWO COPIES of the DNA
  • Whether the NUCLEAR ENVELOPE is present or not
  • If applicable, the LOCATION and DIRECTION OF MOVEMENT of SPINDLE FIBERS
  • Any other relevant structures or processes which apply to only a particular stage
  • LABELS or all relevant cell structures as they apply to MITOSIS

The NGSS standard which is accessed through this WebQuest is:

  • HS-LS1-4. Use a model to illustrate the role of cellular division (mitosis) and differentiation in producing and maintaining complex organisms.

The points of emphasis with regard to mitosis are the ability to differentiate between each stage, and identifying the structures and functions of cell structures which are active during mitosis. Through watching an animation, taking an interactive visual quiz, then creating their own visual model, students should begin to become very familiar with the order of the process of mitosis and the structures and functions present.
