Chemical vs. Physical Change

Introduction

Physical Change: Definition, Types, Examples, and Equations

Hello everyone! Today you will learn about physical and chemical changes. After looking at different types of physical and chemical changes, we will discuss the different types of physical and chemical properties of matter. We will learn about changes in mass, color, shape, texture, and change in matter. The goal of this lesson is to demonstrate an understanding of the physical and chemical properties of matter. Let's get started!

Task

Chemical and Physical Changes of Matter

You will explore different sites in this WebQuest. Be sure to pay close attention to all the information provided. At the end of this WebQuest, you will be expected to write a summary about the difference in a physical and chemical change. You next task will be to complete the worksheet on chemical and physical changes.

Process

Main Difference Between a Chemical and Physical Change | YourDictionary

To begin today's lesson, you will read pg. 262-266 in our McGraw Hill textbook.

Your next job is to watch Physical and Chemical Changes on Flocabulary:

https://www.flocabulary.com/unit/physical-chemical-changes/

After watching the video, you will read the following articles:

https://www.generationgenius.com/chemical-reactions-reading-material-grades-6-8/

https://www.flocabulary.com/unit/physical-chemical-changes/vocab-cards/

https://education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/changes-matter-physical-vs-chemical-changes/

After reading the textbook, watching the video, and reading through the three articles, you will choose either physical or chemical change to discuss to complete the task. You will write a one paragraph summary (4-5 sentences) including a description of the physical or chemical change, the properties of the substance before and after the change, and how you know it is either a physical or chemical change . Make sure to include details and supporting facts. After completing your paragraph, complete the worksheet that will be handed out in class.

Evaluation

The rubric will be how I evaluate your paragraph and worksheet.

# 25 50 75 100 Score
Accuracy of the paragraph Paragraph is not accurate Paragraph has somewhat accuracy  Paragraph is mainly accurate with few inaccuracies  Paragraph is completely accurate of physical or chemical change  100
Descriptiveness of physical or chemical change Does not provide descriptions about physical or chemical change including a summary,  a description of the physical or chemical change, the properties of the substance before and after the change, and how you know it is either a physical or chemical change  Partially describes summary, a description of the physical or chemical change, the properties of the substance before and after the change, and how you know it is either a physical or chemical change  Provide most of the paragraph including summary, a description of the physical or chemical change, the properties of the substance before and after the change, and how you know it is either a physical or chemical change  Completely describes summary, a description of the physical or chemical change, the properties of the substance before and after the change, and how you know it is either a physical or chemical change   100
Grammar/spelling/punctuation Has more than 10 grammar/ spelling/ punctuation errors  Has 6-10 grammar/spelling/punctuation errors Has 1-5 grammar/ spelling/punctuation errors Has no grammar/spelling/punctuation errors 100
Worksheet Has accurately answered less than 3 questions  Has accurately answered less than 6 questions  Has accurately answered less than 9 questions  Has accurately answered 10-12 questions  100
        Total Score 400

Conclusion

Which of the following is not a physical change? [MCQ] - Exemplar NCER

You have read and watched a video about physical and chemical changes and the difference in them today. Additionally, you read three different articles about physical and chemical changes while also writing a summary about one of them. Lastly, you completed a worksheet to help you identify a physical or chemical change. There are many types of physical and chemical changes. We only covered a few! If you are intrigued by this topic, I encourage you to continue to research different physical and chemical changes.

This WebQuest introduces physical and chemical changes and their differences. You can use the Mcgraw Hill Chapter 8 Lesson 2 Review Guide book to follow the pages, or you can use an alternate source that explain physical and chemical changes. The worksheet that I will hand out to my students follow along with the Mcgraw Hill Chapter 8 Lesson 2 Review guide practice; however, you can use another worksheet. Students will identify the different physical and chemical changes by labeling them. There are a variety of worksheets similar available online or you can create your own.

Standards:

Physical Science Grade 7

P.7.5A Students will demonstrate an understanding of the physical and chemical properties of matter.

P.7.5A.1 Collect and evaluate qualitative data to describe substances using physical properties (state, boiling/melting point, density, heat/electrical conductivity, color, and magnetic properties).

P.7.5A.2 Analyze and interpret qualitative data to describe substances using chemical properties (the ability to burn or rust).
