Introduction
Let's take a trip back to when the United States was divided and went to war against their own people. During The Civil War, brothers, family, and friends all fought against each other. Many states, known as the Confederacy or the South were against President Lincoln. While the Union, or the North, were with him, fighting to free slaves among other reasons. Using real artifacts and other facts from the war, decide what side you would have been on! Will you be a soldier and fight for North or for the South?
Task
Using the websites provided, along with the handouts, decide which side you will fight for. To make sure you know which side to pick, let's look at each side and know what they each stood for. Follow the tasks below in order.
Task 1. Get in your groups at your tables and keep all the information you learn with the links and handouts!
Task 2. Now that you have learned lots of information, share it within your groups, fill the questions on the handout to help you pick a side!
Task 3. On the second page of your handouts, write which side you would fight for and why.
Task 4. Make a group presentation that shows each group member's’ choice and the reasons why. Have Fun!
Process
Task 1. In your groups, each of you should write down five facts about the civil war. Two should be about the North and two should be about the South. The other one should also be about The Civil War as a whole or one of the two sides.
Task 2. With your new information, share it with your group. Write down each of your group members facts and then complete the handout. These questions will help you chose later on!
Task 3. From class, we know that the North eventually was fighting to end slavery, as well as keeping the South as part of the US. We also know the South wanted states’ rights and to protect themselves, as well as slavery. Knowing this and the information you learned from task 1, come up with the side you would fight for and a reason to tell why you would!
Task 4. Now that you have wrote down the side you would have fought for and told why, get with your groups again. Once you are in your groups again, make a presentation with each of the members choices’ and why they chose that. Also add ten facts from your group!

Conclusion
Now that you have picked your sides and have learned what each side fought for, reflect on how you made that choice. Kids and the whole country had to live these events and decide on their own which side they would have picked as well.
