Culture/Belonging

Introduction

In this, I will be comparing both "Latehomecomer:" and "My Favorite Chaperone". Both are about discrimination against people with different ethnic/background or culture. Both of them are about how people moving to different countries, and having to adapt to their new environment and social life. In this, I will be comparing the purposes for both of the author's reason for the selection, as well as how both the authors connect to the theme of the stories. I will also be explaining the figurative language that was utilized in both of the stories.

Task

In both of the selections, it talked about how they had to face discrimination. They all had to adapt to the new places they had to go to, and make that place their home. They both connect to Culture/Belonging because they had to deal with people fitting in to different ethnic groups. The themes can be compared to Culture/Belonging because of the situation they were having. In both The Late HomeComer and My Favorite Chaperone, they had to deal with moving to another country/state and getting used to those kinds of people. Later on the story, they were adapted to it, and was treated equally(ish). In My Favorite Chaperone, it had a lot of figurative language, including simile and metaphor. some of the similes were "It was empty, like a dry riverbed where there is only cracked, baked earth and nothing lives", and "Like a person made from wood, a puppet, I followed Ms. Johnson through the main office down the hall to her office across from the principal’s." The author also included metaphors such as "Mama’s face was a flame turned up on the stove, and she spun toward me, her eyes flashing."

Process

In this process, I had to analyze the purposes for both the authors reason for the selection they did. I also discussed how they connected to the theme, by comparing "LateHomeComer" and "My Favorite Chaperone" . The only comparison was how they  were discriminated by other ethnic groups. They had to face many challenges and problems. There was also many figurative languages, but mostly simile and hyperbole. I also looked for images to show how they fitted in at the end.

Conclusion

In conclusion, both the late home comer and My favorite chaperone were faced against discrimination. They both had to deal with the fact that they had to move to a new area. They had many challenges along the way, while dealing with the fact that they were different from most people. The purpose was for discrimination, why both were how the authors were discriminated because of their ethnicity.  Figurative Languages also include "Mama’s face was a flame turned up on the stove, and she spun toward me, her eyes flashing.".
