Introduction
The author talks about culture and belonging. And how it's different for everyone to get use to a new setting based on their background.
- How long did it take for he/she to get used to the area, language, and customs?
- How did they feel about leaving their first home?
- How did they feel about arriving to a new home?
Task
- To show peoples story on how they got used to a new environment
- Both of the authors describe the thoughts and feelings of the new civilizations coming to a new place and telling their experiences when they arrived. For example in My Favorite Chaperone it states "It's like that in America. It's a place where things can change for people, and many people always seem to have hope." And for Bonee Annee it states "I have no memory of Haiti. No memory of my crib in Port-au-Prince, no memory of the neighbors’ children or the house in which we lived." This shows that the narrator has grown up his whole life in a different country than his "home" country.
- In my favorite chaperone the hyperbole, "It seemed like one thousand years, but it was only a minute before Ms.Illo brought papa into the office." means Maya was anxious that everything slowed down in that moment for Maya. and in Bonee Annee the idiom,"With their crooked ruler the adults can no longer draw a straight line, but I can still connect the dots and see that they lead nowhere." means that the leader of the narrators home country is a dictator and making the citizens lives difficult.
This photo shows people protesting to get rid of Duvalier. This shows people migrating and going to a new place for either having better opportunities or civil rights problems in their country.

Conclusion
In conclusion, these immigrants were going through a difficult stage. It was hard for them to fit in and they had to face many challenges along the way, with the fact they were different from many people. It was a struggle for them because they didn't understand the American culture and how things worked. But in the end, they had to fit in and treated the same way we want to be treated. And nobody should feel misplaced even if they come from a different place. With that being said, students should have a better understanding of the authors purpose of both selections, our theme, and the figurative language used.
