Polygons

Introduction

My web quest is going to be about polygons. A curve that consists of a union of finitely many line segments is called a polygonal curve. A polygon is a simple closed polygonal curve.

Shapes

Task

You must work individually on this exploration. The final result of this exploration is being able to tell what polygons are, name different polygons, and draw polygons on your own.

Process

The material you will need for this web quest will be

A Poster Board

Crayons/Markers

Answer Five Questions Given

First visit the website (Math Is Fun) at

www.mathsisfun.com/geometry/polygons.html Look

over this website and answer the following questions

True or False

1.) A polygon is a plane shape with straight sides

2.) Polygons are 2-dimensional shapes. They are made

of straight lines, and the shape is "closed" (all the lines connect up)

3.) A simple polygon has only one boundary, and it doesn't cross over itself.

4.) A complex polygon intersects itself! Many rules about polygons don't work when it is complex.

5.) A convex polygon has no angles pointing inwards. More precisely, no internal angles can be more than 180°.

6.) There are any internal angles greater than 180° then it is concave. (Think: concave has a "cave" in it).

Second visit the website (Math Cats) at www.mathcats.com/explore/polygons.html Then click on (Go To Polygon Playground) and play with the shapes. This will prepare you for the last step of this web quest.

Finally, you will create your own polygon shapes on the poster board. I want you to pick polygon shapes to draw using markers or crayons. Put the name of the shape above the shape and the number of sides below the shape. Please make your poster as colorful and creative as possible.

HAVE FUN!!!!!

Evaluation

Cadets were asked to visit the (Math Is Fun) website and answer six questions. Then they were asked to visit the (Math Cats) website and play in the polygon playground. Last they were asked to create their own polygon shapes on a poster board.

Credits

The cadets will be able to tell what polygons are, name different polygons, and draw
polygons on your own. I want cadets to be able to use the websites
I listed to learn about polygons, while having fun. Be sure to visit
the sites ahead of your cadetss to make sure that they are all
appropriate for your school and your cadets.
