ECONOMICS!!

Introduction

Hi guys,

For the past week, we've been learning a bit about Kentucky's government, its different leaders and the roles they play, and the rules that the people of Kentucky have to follow.  In todays lesson, we're going to be starting our unit on producers and consumers in the economic system.  For today we're just going to go a little in depth with what these two definitions mean.  As we get farther into the week, we'll learn what being a producer and consumer indicates (means) for the every day person and what it means for YOU.

I'm excited to start, so let's just jump right in!

Task

All tasks are to be completed after I give the small presentation/introduction to producers and consumers.

-Think about these questions as we prepare to watch a video:

    --> What is a producer?

    --> What is a consumer?

    --> How are producers and consumers related?

-Watch the short YouTube video on producers and consumers to gain some familiarity with the material (the link will be copied in the following section.

-Pair and share with your table partner (5 minutes) (This part is applicable only if this lesson is in person. If not in class, please answer the questions written down).

-After the video, play the game that I've sent to your Chrome books (link provided on next section) as a warm up for the final activity.

- Presentation Project! Write a chart for producers and consumers (instructions given in next section) with examples of each.

-Present your project to the room, this doesn't have to be long, just explain to the class what you wrote down.

Process

- Sit on the rug and listen to the introduction of producers and consumers with the following questions in mind.

    --> What is a producer?

    --> What is a consumer?

    --> How are producers and consumers related?

- Okay, now everyone please grab a pencil and paper and pay close attention to the video that I'm going to play.

It's going to get us more familiar with our subject.  I want you all to write 3-5 takeaways from the video and be ready to share!

- Pair up with your table partner and share your takeaways and discuss the questions on the whiteboard (as stated previously, this portion is only if we are in person.  If we are not in class, please be sure to answer the questions on a piece of paper and put it in your folder and be ready to turn it in).

- Once you all have finished, I would like for you to go to the website that I've provided for you all.  You'll find a fun matching game as soon as you click on the link.  The rounds are pretty simple, they're just to get you thinking and are like a warm-up for our big activity.  I want you all to complete 7 rounds.  https://www.tinytap.com/activities/g4a38/play/consumers-producers-connections If the link isn't working for you, let me know and I will type in the website name: Consumer & Producer Connections.

-Lastly, for our big activity and assessment, we're going to be doing a presentation project. Everyone take a paper out of the big notebook from the back of the classroom.  You all are going to be drawing a chart with producers and consumers on two different sides.  In your own words, explain what each is and give different examples of both.  These examples can be made up people or people that you see in your every day life (like your mom or dad).

- Present your project to the classroom, this doesn't have to take a long time, just simply explain to the class what you wrote down.

-Once everyone has finished, turn in your charts on my desk.  Make sure to put your name on the paper!

Evaluation

In order for me to properly grade the tasks I've given you, I have the answers

Producer  The person who makes the good or provides the service
Consumer someone who buys something/the person who buys the goods or service
Example of Producer a barber, chef, farmer
Example of Consumers  the person getting their hair cut, the people eating the pizza, mom buying groceries

If three or more are answered correctly, the activity is a passing grade.

ANSWERS to the questions given at the beginning of class time:

What is a producer? "The person who makes the good or provides the service"
What is a consumer? Someone who buys something/the person who buys the goods or service
How are producers and consumers related The producer makes what the consumer buys.

If two or more are answered correctly, the activity is a passing grade.

Conclusion

Good job, guys!  Hopefully, you all learned a good bit about what producers and consumers are and different examples of each!  Please let me know if you had any problems with the technology at all!

Teacher Page

This lesson is being taught to a group of 3rd graders who have only touched on the subject of producers and consumers briefly in previous grades.  The point of the lesson was to get them thinking critically about producers and consumers in their own, everyday  environment and to set them up to be able to give different examples of each and to be able to explain the concept to a peer.  The lesson can be taught to a general classroom or an individual student can use WebQuest to complete activities.
