HSB4U - Technology and Social Structure

Introduction

Students will analyze a poster that illustrates new technological advances in modern life. 

Students will then create their own public service advertisement illiustrating how new technologies (e.g., in medicine, education, entertainment, health and wellness) can affect social structures and interactions.

Task

Students will anaylse a poster on modern technologies and make inferences and opinions about how new technologies (e.g., in medicine, education, entertainment, health and wellness) can affect social structures and interactions.

They will create a public service poster, like the one below, to advertise/illustrate their opinions.

Process

Step 1:

1. First, look at the example poster: Modern Life

2. Next, working independently, examine the poster and attempt to answer the questions about the poster. You will compare your answers with your groups later.

3. We'll have a showcase at the end of the unit in which you will create your own poster showcasing your opinions about how new technologies (e.g., in medicine, education, entertainment, health and wellness) can affect social structures and interactions.

Step 2:

Using the following resources, find the answers to the scavenger hunt.  This is an individual exercise!

Step 3:

TASK: Working in groups of three OR four,design a public service poster.  It should include a simple message, have a strong visual impact, and make the viewer aware of the impact of technology on social structures and/or interaction.

You may use art supplies from the classroom or use design software such as Adobe Photo Shop, Microsoft Publisher etc.
