Based on Constructivist theories of learning and teaching, exploratory pedagogical models allow learners to:

  • Take control of their own learning
  • Approach learning tasks in diverse ways
  • See knowledge as rich and multidimensional

There are a variety of Exploratory Pedagogical Models.  These include (but are not limited to) :

  • WebQuests (Like this activity right now)
  • Discovery Learning
  • Inquiry Based Learning
  • Problem, Project Based, Process Based Learning
  • The 5E Method

Exploratory Model 1: The WebQuest, is an inquiry oriented lesson format, in which most or all of the information is found on the internet, through linked sites and a specific task, which the teacher has facilitated.

Exploratory Models 2 and 3: Inquiry based and Discovery based Learning, are methods in which the teacher provides a structuring question, and the students work in small groups to answer the question utilizing an inquiry or discovery based process such as research.

Exploratory Model 4: Problem, Project or Process Based learning, Students are given a project to complete, they are then given time to brainstorm ideas on how to accomplish or complete the project in small groups, they work in their groups discovering knowledge and completing the project, and work through issues together as they arise, etc... cyclically just like in an adult work situation.

Exploratory Model 5: the 5Es, A pedagogical model used mainly in Science and STEM classrooms that includes Engagement in a theory or idea, exploration of the same, then explanation, elaboration, and finally evaluation.

In this webquest, you will complete the TASK found in the next tab of this WEBQUEST.

Task

Candidates proceed through the entire WebQuest learning about the various exploratory models.  After watching the videos and reading about each model, choose one of the pedagogical models (OR YOUR INSTRUCTOR MAY ASSIGN YOU A MODEL DEPENDENT ON INSTRUCTOR PREFERENCE AND CLASS SIZE) discussed in the introduction.  Go to the websites listed for your chosen model and review more deeply.  Read through the lesson plans and and articles found in the OER commons and gain an understanding of your model, and then use that understanding to create a short mini lesson, teaching content of your choice USING the model.  Candidates will also be provided with a "sample class" and must  also indicate how you they will provide aspects of differentiation and/or UDL to help everyone in the class gain a thorough understanding of the content.

Once you have interacted with the content for your assigned pedagogical model, you will design your short (10-15) minute lesson plan in your small group.  Remember to incorporate elements of Universal Design for Learning that you learned in your previous Art of Teaching I course. (If you need a refresher go to: https://udlguidelines.cast.org/.),for your "sample class" as you design your instruction.  The "sample class" is found in the attachments in the OER module.  You will also find that the "sample class" includes a student or students to differentiate instruction for.  Remember to think through and discuss with your group how you would provide differentiated instruction for those students. You will be asked to complete a journaling activity on this after class.

TO FIND OUT HOW THIS ASSIGNMENT WILL BE EVALUATED, SEE THE "EVALUATION TAB" .

Evaluation

Candidates receive points for teaching their lesson as follows: 1 point for demonstrating/using the weekly Pedagogical model correctly. 1 point for providing UDL/differentiation for the sample class/case study students well. 1 point for clearly teaching/conveying the content they chose.
