Pompeii and Herculaneum - Investigating, reconstructing and preserving the past

Introduction

The next part of your learning will be a little different. With the goal of deveoping your skills as independent learners, we will be studying the last part of our unit, Investigating, reconstructing and preserving the past, through a webquest.

The outcomes you will have achieved at the end of this webquest will be:

H3.1 locate, select and organise relevant information from a variety of sources

H 3.4 explain and evaluate differing perspectives and interpretations of the past

H3.5 analyse issues relating to ownership and custodianship of the past.

H3.6 plan and present the findings of historical investigations, analysing and synthesising information from a range of sources

H.4.1 use historical terms and concepts appropriately

H4.2 communicate a knowledge and understanding of historical features and issues using appropriate oral and written forms

Task

In this webquest, you will be investigating part 3 of your core study Pompeii and Herculaneum.

3  Investigating, reconstructing and preserving the past

  • changing methods and contributions of nineteenth and twentieth century archaeologists to our understanding of Pompeii and Herculaneum
  • changing interpretations: impact of new research and technologies
  • issues of conservation and reconstruction: Italian and international contributions and
responsibilities; impact of tourism
  • ethical issues: study and display of human remains

The webquest is divided into 4 parts.

In each part, you will have 2 options to choose from.

Option A is for students who would like some guidance.

Option B is for students who would like to work more independently.

We will be working through this webquest in class.

Process

1. Investigate the methods of 19th and 20th century archaeologists and their contributions to our understanding of Pompeii.

Option A

i) Choose at least two 19th century archaeologists and at least two 20th century archaeologists to research.

ii) Organise the information into the table on the worksheet I will hand out in class.

Option B

Produce a written response assessing and critiquing the methods and contributions of 19th and 20th century archaeologists. You must refer to at least two archaeologists from both the 19th and 20th century.

2. How have new research and technologies changed interpretations of Pompeii and Herculaneum?

Option A

The following are three ideas about Pompeii and Herculaneum that have now changed. What are the new interpretations and what new research and technologies led archaeologists to the new ideas?

a) Pompeii was in economic decline after the 62AD earthquake

b) The only victims of the eruption were the sick, weak and elderly who were unable to leave.

c) Each building and each room had single purpose for the way it was used.

Option B

In a written response, evaluate how new research and technologies since the 1980s have changed earlier interpretations of Pompeii and Herculaneum and their citizens.

3. Explore issues of conservation and reconstruction including Italian and international contributions and
responsibilities and the impact of tourism.

Option A

i) In your own words, describe what is meant by the ‘second death’ of Pompeii.

ii) Choose at least 4 Italian or International Projects and create a mind map about their aims, what kind of work they are doing and what the results have been.

iii) In your own words, describe the difference between conservation and reconstruction.

iv) Create a list of arguments for each side of the debate between conservation v reconstruction

v) What are the advantages and disadvantages of tourism in Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Option B

i) What is the ‘second death’ of Pompeii and how have Italian and international organisations contributed to combatting this phenomenon?

ii) Based on your research, do you believe conservation or reconstruction is better for Pompeii and Herculaneum? Justify your response.

iii) Based on your research, can you think of an original idea to solve some of the issues relating to the custodianship of Pompeii and Herculaneum?

4. What are the ethical issues in the study and display of human remains?

Option A

i) Write a list of arguments for and against the study and display of human remains from Pompeii and Herculaneum.

ii) Give your opinion with reference to what you have learnt:

a) Should human remains be displayed to the general public?

b) How do human remains help us understand the past?

c) Could this understanding be achieved in any other way?

d) Is there any difference between displaying plaster casts of human bodies and skeletons?

e) What is the difference between displaying the remains of people from Pompeii and Herculaneum and displaying the remains of more recent victims of disasters such as the MH17 crash?

Option B

i) Assess the importance and value of studying and displaying human remains from Pompeii and Herculaneum and compare this with the ethical dilemma that this practice poses.

ii) Make a decision on where you stand in this debate and defend your position.
