The Hydrologic Cycle Process step by step

Introduction

                          Attention Future Meteorologists!

Calling out all future geniuses!! Alright 2nd grade kids, today we have a
very important subject to discuss.

Did you know that...

     - Rain is one form of precipitation?

     - Precipitation also includes snow and sleet!

Well, today we will be learning about the Hydrologic Cycle! It is all about how clouds form with evaporated water and collect water molecules till it creates droplets and precipitation and storms develop!

AMAZING RIGHT!?

Our learning activity will be a hands-on experiment! Before the whole excitement, please join me in watching this amazing video explaining more about Hydrologic Cycle!

Okay, boys and girls, now that you learn some very fun stuff. You'll want to click on "Task" button and find out what you'll be learning about in this meteorological webquest!!

Task

Hello there, aspiring Meteorologists! (that's a fancy word for a weather person!)

We know that there are 4 major stations in the hydrologic cycle. (Hyrdologic is also a fancy word for water!)
To understand what happens at each "station" we need to know their names!

Try to pronounce each one, you may even know a few already!

  • Evaporation
  • Condensation
  • Precipitation
  • Groundwater

Since we watched the video about the droplet's journey, let's try to match the terms above with the journey the droplet made. Use the photo below if you need a hint!

Image result for water cycle 4 parts

                                                                                                                                   How'd you do?

Now that we know what the words are, what do they mean?
Well to find out, for this part you'll need a few very, very scientific items!

Obtain these scientific items:

  • One large glass bowl
  • One smaller glass bowl       (very important that both bowls are clear!!)
  • Plastic cling wrap
  • A cup of hot water
  • Gloves
  • Salt
  • Ice cubes

Once you have all these important things altogether, we are finally ready to start fully understanding the HYDROLOGIC CYCLE with an experiment to demonstrate it!

-------------------------Hydrologic Cycle Experiment-------------------------

Now that all the items are gathered, it's finally time for instructions on the experiment you will be doing in the process section!

  1. While wearing the gloves, very carefully pour the hot water into the big glass bowl

  2. Sprinkle salt and stir in the water with the spoon to make it salty - like the ocean!

  3. Place the small glass bowl into the larger glass bowl to act as your land

  4. Cover the larger bowl with the plastic cling wrap. Make sure it's sealed!

  5. Place the cubes of ice on top of the cling wrap surface

  6. Wait for about 10 minutes

  7. Observe and Identify each item and "station"!

  8. Clean up

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alright boys and girls, it is time to begin with our journey into the world of creating rain!

Up next in the process section, you will be watching a video demonstrating the experiment and answer a few quiz questions. But there's a twist....!!

You are all in a race to beat the girl in the video to finish all the tasks! Since you all already know everything you have to do, it should be a breeze! If you forget what to do, the girl in the video is there to help you. Follow every step and be sure to think about what each item means in the hydrologic cycle. And remember to be very careful with the water and bowls!

Think you're up to the challenge, Meteorologists?

Process

Let's make it rain inside!!!

This experience will show you everything that is going on during the process of Hydrologic Cycle. Follow the instructions in the task section, and do your best I know you got it !!

Now that you know everything, let's see what is going on!

For this next Activity take a pen and paper right down your answers, and click on Evaluation to check your max points after the test.

Did you get it? Are you sure? This is a flash test to see if now, you are a real Meteorologist!

1 - The process of Hydrologic cycle started by:

A) The condensation of water

B) Watching Moana

C) The evaporation of the water from the ocean in the atmosphere

2 - The condensation defined the phenomena which one

A) Water vapor changes it's physical stage to mostly liquid, and part solid

B) Water goes to the space

C) Water transformed in snow

3 - Precipitation is the process by which one

A) The weather is really hot

B) Clouds are fighting in the air

C) All forms of water particles fall from the cloud to the ground

4 - Once the water reaches the ground, which one of those processes can occurs:

A) the water can go back to the ocean

B) some of the water may evaporate back into the atmosphere

C) the water may penetrate the surface and become groundwater

5- How else can you called the hydraulic cycle?

A) The water cycle

B) The Pursuit of Happiness

C) The H20 cycle

Answers: c/a/c/b/ac

So, How did you do...?

Congratulations, you're awesome!!!

Now in order to determine if you are correct or not, you'll need to click on "Evaluation" tab in order to access the scoring rubric created there. The scoring rubric will help you determine your maximum number of points for this activity.
