A verb is one of the main parts of a sentence or question in English.

In fact, you can’t have a sentence or a question without a verb! That’s how important these “action” parts of speech are.

The verb signals an action, an occurrence, or a state of being. Whether mental, physical, or mechanical, verbs always express activity

A verb can express:

  • A physical action (e.g., to swimto writeto climb).
  • A mental action (e.g., to thinkto guessto consider).
  • A state of being (e.g., to beto existto appear).

Conclusion

What is a verb? Got it all? Here’s some point you need to remember about Verb:

-There are three categories of verbs (action, linking, helping).

-Only two can be main verbs (action, linking). Main means that the verb is strong enough to be the only verb in the sentence.

-Helping verbs are not main verbs. They help action and linking verbs.

-A helping verb and a main verb working together are called a verb phrase.
