Foreign Language - Italian

Introduction

Hello Students, welcome to your Italian language WebQuest! In this project, you will embark on a journey through Italy’s rich and diverse culture, exploring the ways art, food, and history influence both language and identity. Throughout this activity, you will work in groups to research a specific aspect of Italian culture, using your language skills to create a multimedia presentation. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of the Italian language while also diving into how culture shapes communication across different regions of Italy.

Guiding Questions:

Starting the project, students should ask themselves these questions:

  • How does Italian culture shape language use in different regions of Italy?
  • What role does art, food, and history play in the Italian identity?

These questions will guide your research and help you understand how language and culture are intricately connected. In Italy, regional dialects and cultural practices vary greatly, and this diversity is reflected in how the Italian language is spoken and used in different parts of the country. You will also explore the deep connection between Italy’s art, food, and history, and how these elements shape the modern Italian identity.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this WebQuest, students will:

  • Students will expand their Italian vocabulary related to cultural topics (e.g., art, food, geography).
  • Students will practice speaking and writing in Italian while researching and presenting a cultural topic.
  • Students will use technology to create a group presentation in Italian, demonstrating both their language skills and cultural understanding.

Florida State Standards Alignment:

This WebQuest aligns with the following Florida State Standards for World Languages:

  • Standard 1: Communication – Students will engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
  • Standard 2: Cultures – Students will understand the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the culture studied and use this knowledge to better understand language.
  • Standard 3: Connections – Students will reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the study of world languages.
  • Standard 4: Comparisons – Students will develop insight into the nature of language and culture by comparing their own language and culture to those studied.
  • Standard 5: Communities – Students will use the language both within and beyond the school setting for personal enjoyment, enrichment, and further study.

With these guiding questions and learning objectives in mind, you’ll begin your WebQuest by researching and exploring your assigned cultural topic. As you dive into the rich culture of Italy, you’ll expand your understanding of the Italian language and how it is influenced by the country’s diverse traditions and history.

In your groups, you will create a narrated PowerPoint presentation in Italian about a specific topic from Italian culture. Topics could include famous Italian cities (e.g., Rome, Venice, Florence), well-known Italian artists (e.g., Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo), regional foods (e.g., pizza from Naples, pasta from Bologna), or Italian holidays and festivals. Your presentation should showcase not only the facts but also your ability to speak and write in Italian. Your PowerPoint must include:
