Internet Safety

Introduction

Internet Safety WebQuest

With all of the internet bullying going on the PTO had an emergency meeting and the parents of your school have banned the use of the Internet at school! After a unanimous vote to put a hold on all Internet activities, the parents vow that they will never again allow their children to be put in danger by giving them access to the Internet. These parents believe that the Internet is nothing more than an unsafe playground. After much pleading by the school librarian to reconsider the decision, the parents have agreed to meet again next week for a final vote.

Will the Internet be banned forever?

Or can the students change their future?

Are you up for the challenge?

Task

What are you supposed to do?

You have been selected to defend the use of the Internet to the parents of your school.  It is your job to prove to the parents that you and your classmates understand how to be safe on the Internet.  You only have one chance to convince them that the Internet should not be banned from your school.  Your class will be divided up into pairs and each pair of students will research one aspect of  Internet Safety: Cyberbullying, Netiquette, Social Networking, or Information Privacy.  When your research is complete, you and your partner will present what you learned to the class, and create a poster about you topic that will be displayed in the school.

Remember, you and your partner are trying to persuade your parents to vote in favor of allowing the Internet back into the school.  Work hard to convince them that you know how to use it safely and responsibly and why it is important to do so.

What are you responsible for?

Each student will be responsible for completing the following items:

  • Answering questions about your assigned topics
  • Creating a poster, with your partner, about cyberbullying
  • Presenting your information to the class
  • Becoming an expert in Internet Safety

Process

Evaluation

You will be creating a poster that represents your internet safety topic.

What information do I put in my poster?

Remember that you are still trying to convince the parents of the school to let the students use the Internet in school.  You want to include

      • the information you found in your research (the answers to your questions)
      • background and design
      • pictures

Each member of the group must assist in the creation of the poster.  Do a rough draft design first.  Be sure to check your spelling and grammar!

So....

  • Is your research done?
  • Have you answered all your questions?

If you answered YES to all these questions, you're READY to make your poster.  See your instructor and she'll get you started.

:-)    Have FUN!    :-)
