Introduction
こんにちは (Kon'nichiwa) 7th Graders,
Welcome to our study of traditional Japanese art! Japan is such a beautiful place; it is no wonder that many aspects of Japanese culture reflect nature. You are about to become a "mini-expert" in one form of Japanese art.
心から (Kokoro kara),
Mrs. Davis

Task
In groups of 3-4, you will be researching one type of traditional Japanese art, creating an art piece, and then teaching the rest of the class about your assigned art form in a google slides presentation.

Process
| Step 1 |
-You will be assigned to a group and to one of the following Japanese art forms: Origami, Haiku, Ikebana, or Shodo -Determine which role will be your primary job during this project. (note: everyone in the group is responsible for all aspects of the project, but your role will be your main contribution.) 1) Team leader- Help out group members, make sure everyone is on the same page. Remind each member to check the rubric daily to make sure they are progressing. Direct presentation practice. 2) Time keeper-Make sure group members are meeting daily goal, remind members of what they need to finish by the end of each block. 3) Creative-Add flair to the google slides, give group members guidance when needed while creating art. 4) Logistics- Make sure each member knows what to say during presentation. |
| Step 2 |
-Find the links for your assigned art form below, read the webpages and take notes. a) Origami http://web-japan.org/kidsweb/virtual/origami/index.html http://web-japan.org/kidsweb/virtual/origami2/index.html b) Haiku http://www.creative-writing-now.com/how-to-write-a-haiku.html http://www.poetry4kids.com/lessons/how-to-write-a-haiku/ c) Ikebana http://web-japan.org/kidsweb/virtual/ikebana/index.html https://www.ikebanabyjunko.com/ikebana-history/ d) Shodo http://web-japan.org/kidsweb/virtual/shodo/index.html http://www.japanvisitor.com/japanese-culture/language/japanese-shodo |
| Step 3 | Each group member will create their own art piece (for example, you are making an origami piece if you are in the origami group) |
| Step 4 | As a group, create a google slides presentation. The goal is to teach the class what you learned. Slides should include: a brief history of the art-form, a variety of art images, and general steps of how you created your art piece. |
| Step 5 | Practice! Who will say what during the presentation? What will you say about what you created (did you enjoy it, what were the challenges, etc). Finally, present your art and slides to the class. |
Evaluation
| Needs Work | Meets Standard | Exceeds Standard | |
| Use of time researching, planning, and creating | Not using time wisely, socializing too much, off-task | On-task, helpful to group members, contributes ideas, engaged in creative process | Takes on a leadership role, helpful to group members, contributes ideas, engaged fully |
| Art Project | Unfinished or sloppy | Neatly done and good effort put in, reflects what you learned about the art-form | Spectacular! Creative and beautiful |
| Google Slides | Unfinished or sloppy | Neatly done and good effort put in, reflects what you learned abou the art-form | Creative, interesting and informative |
| Presentation | Lacking posture and strong speaking voice, difficult to understand/ unpracticed | Good posture, speaks clearly and projects voice, shows practice was put in | Good posture, projects voice, speaks with confidence, you have become a mini-expert! |
Conclusion
This concludes our study of Japanese art. I hope you have enjoyed learning about different art-forms while creating your own version and teaching the class. よくできました / Yoku dekimashita (Good work!)
