Newton's 2nd Law of Motion

Introduction

Introducation

Newton's three laws of motion are all around us at every moments of the day. That ball you threw at recess, that's part of Newton's three laws of Motion. We have already learned about Friction and Newton's 1st law of motion. Now its time to learn about newton's 2nd law of motion. You will need to explore on-line to find project completed that fit under Newton's 2nd law of motion. If you need refreshed on Sir Isaac Newton this is the site to visit.

Task

Task

  • You will meet 4th grade standards for science in understanding Newton's laws of motion.
  • You will work in groups of three-four that are preasigned by me. You are to locate 3 websites that show Newton's 2nd law of motion at work.
  • Collect your data and save your website! You will present this to the whole class.
  • You will need to find at least one website that will help you in developing a activity to conduct for the class.
  • This activity should be unique and creative but demonstarting Newon's 2nd Law of Motion.
Process

Process

We will go over friction and Newton's 1st law of motion

Groups will be assigned

Do not stop at these website, use the resource found on these pages to keep searching for more websites.

Gather your data and find a unique activity to show the class

You will need to list your references since these are not your ideas. Give credit where credit is due

Check yourself:

Does our activity cover Newton's 2nd law of motion?

Do you have 3 websites listed?

Are you ready to present to the class?

Can you answer question if classmates ask?

Does everyone in the group have informatino written in their science journal?

Use of 3 websites

Students used only one website. The website is related to Newton’s Laws

Students used less than three websites, each does relate to Newton’s laws

Students used less that three websites, each is useful to understanding Newton’s laws

Students used all three websites that are useful and understanding of Newton’s laws

Planning of unique activity

Students can write a brief idea for an activity that relates to Newton’s laws

Students write a brief idea for activity but not for the 2nd law of motion

Students write activity that relates to Newton’s 2nd law

Students write activity that relates to Newton’s 2nd law and list materials needed

Participation

Minimum participation

Student was involved but did not record the information

Student was involved and recorded information in journal

Student was involved, recorded information in journal, and helped with activity

Conclusion

Conclusion

This activity helped you to

  • To navigate through the internet
  • Understand Newton's 2nd Law of Motion
  • Work in groups
  • Meet standards

a. Observe that balanced forces do not affect an object’s motion

(need to clarify that balanced forces means no change in forces acting on an object)

b. Describe how unbalanced forces

acting on an object changes its speed (faster/slower), direction of motion, or both

(need to clarify that unbalanced forces means any change in forces acting on an object)

c. Predict how thechange in speed of an object (i.e., faster/slower/remain s the same) is affected by the amount of force applied to an object and the mass of the object
