Introduction
You are about to travel back in time to a world very different from that which you live in today. It was a simpler time, before video games, cell phones, or even computers. Although the 1960's were very different from what you are used to growing up with, you will probably be surprised at how well you can relate to, understand, and even learn from the characters in S.E. Hinton’s novel The Outsiders. You will explore everything from 60's music and television to government, cars and even gang life.

Task

Your task is to gain knowledge of the early 1960's culture in order to better understand and connect with the characters in The Outsiders. You will also use this knowledge in the final project.
Using the websites, books, graphic organizers, and other information provided on theProcess page, you and your group will be asked to explore many aspects of the 60's.
This process will go quickly as you will be asked to do some investigative group work by finding specific facts and details about important people, events, and activities of the decade.
Work cooperatively with one another and follow all directions carefully and completely in order to successfully accomplish this task.

Group Five:
- List 6 historical U. S. events about the mid 1960's. Use http://www.history.com/topics/1960s and http://history1900s.about.com/od/timelines/tp/1960timeline.htm. What was interesting about each event? Record your information on the "Mid 1960's Historical U. S. Events" graphic organizer at your table.
ALL Groups:
- Read the print outs at your table. Use the T-chart paper and markers to answer the following questions. Bullet your answers and write largely. Present this information to your classmates.
- What are some reasons why a teenager might join a gang in the 60's? Why might they join today?
- What were gangs like in the 1960’s? What are gangs like today?
- Conclude with what you think about gangs and their behavior?
- Use Google Earth to locate our school on the map. Use the school's address to create a path from it to Tulsa, Oklahoma.
- Calculate the total number of miles we are from Tulsa by using the mileage within the Get Directions section. Plot the distances on the "A Trip to Tulsa, Oklahoma" graphic organizer on your table.
- Then, find the following places in Oklahoma on Google Earth:
- Admiral Twin Drive-In, Will Rogers High School, Mohawk Park, University of Tulsa Oklahoma, and St. Andrew's Church. Make a prediction of what you think will happen at these places in the book. Be ready to show one of these places to your classmates and tell them what you predicted.
Evaluation
For this Webquest, you will be evaluated based on two components: your printed Webquest document and your group poster on your topic of interest.
Your document will be worth 20 pts, and the group poster and presentation 20 pts.
