Introduction
Welcome!
How exciting, you're going on a class trip! You're taking a plane and venturing to somewhere international. To get to your destination, you must fly over a BIG (yes, big!) ocean.
I almost forgot the best part. No adults!! Let the adventure begin.
OH NO... it seems your plane has crashed. Amazingly, you have all survived, but are stranded on a deserted island. Not knowing when (or if) you'll be rescued, you must all work together and figure out how to survive on this island.
Lucky for you, William Golding has written a book similar to the predicament you find yourself in - Lord of the Flies.
Maybe there something in this book that will help with your survival?
Let's jump on in!
Task
Your task: Survive! But how?
You will work in groups of 8. Each member of the group must have a role to play in concerning your survival.
Think about: How does our society work? What laws/rules do we have in place? Is their a hierarchy? If so, why? Is it useful?
You will have two (yes, only two) classes to create your survival plan.
Remember: Have fun! Be creative!
Happy surviving.
Process
Ah yes. How will you organize your plan? Well... lucky for you, I have a well trained owl that can find your location; but sadly, he is beyond stubborn and refuses to tell us where you are. He will bring you survival packages to fill out. Each group will fill and hand in one. (Make sure all your names or on it!)
Your package will include:
Priorities: list your top 5 needs and why.
Leadership: who will lead? Why? How will you decide? List 8 traits that make a good leader.
Roles: you've decided on your leader, what are the roles of the rest of the group? How is the hierarchy structured?
- List each member and their role. Write a small paragraph explaining their role.
Rules: list 12 rules that your society will live by.
Laying Down the Law: looks like you have some trouble makers that don't like your new rules and have broken a few of them. What rules did they break? How are you going to bring justice? Does where the trouble makers stand in the hierarchy change how they will be judge?
- Choose 4, or more, members. State their names and roles. What did they do? What rules did they break? Did they break more than one?
- Decided on different verdicts for each member.
Camp Structure: where are you going to sleep? How are you going to build shelter? What will your camp structure look like? Will you live on the ground? Tree Tops? What will you use to make sure your structure is sturdy? Do all living quarters look the same? Or does the hierarchy make a different? Why?
Get cracking! Time to organize - looks like a big storm is rolling in.
Evaluation
How will I determine your survival?
Criteria to follow:
- All group members are equal participants.
- Each section is: organized, neat, full of details.
- Survival plan is well thought out and looks highly feasible.
- Reasoning behind all decisions are well argued and expressed.
- Survival package has ALL your names on it.
- Use of proper mechanics and grammar are used in writing. (This is a fun project, but you still need to be able to present it clearly)
Conclusion
You are an extremely lucky group! A low flying plane has been spotted and you have successfully flagged it down - you're on your way home to your families.
My goodness, I have miss you all greatly.
But now that you're back let's dive into Lord of the Flies. See if their survival plan lives up to yours. See what they did differently.
