The Magic Hour

Introduction

Light is the most important element of photography. If you do not have the propper light then you will not get the desired result in your pictures. Light creates mood and it also helps in communicating the ideas and the message you want to convey. After all, when we create art we are really telling a story or relating our ideas and feelings to someone else. In this web quest you will be learning about the magic hour and how it effects your pictures.

Task

Students will find two magazine pictures that create mood by the lighting in the pictures. They will turn in the pictures along with the answers to the questions posted in the process section. Then they will view the web site about the magic hour and they will write a paragraph about what the magic hour is. Then they will take pictures at the magic hour with a mood in mind. Each student will download their best 10 pictures and choose their favorite to put on a word document and label the Aperture, ISO and Shutter Speed

Process

1. Get with your table group of 4 and discuss the different moods that people might have.  Write them down in your journals.

2. Look through magazines for pictures that portray a mood that either you thought of or not. If you did not think of that particular mood, add it to your notes.

3. You will turn in 2 pictures with the answers to these questions for each picture.

How does light or lack of light determine mood?

What kind of feelings does the photograph give you? Why?

What effects does the lighting have on the subjects in the photo?

When do you think the photo was taken? What makes you think that?

4. Then you will go to http://www.ronbigelow.com/articles/magic/magic.htm web site and read about "The Magic Hour" You will each write a paragraph about what the magic hour means based on what you read.

5. Each student will take about 25 to 30 pictures during one of "The Magic Hours" having a certain mood in mind.  Think about your subject, your shadows, your angle and the mood you want to portray. Then you will download your best 10 photos onto your photo drive under a folder labeled  "The magic Hour". Choose your favorite photo to put on a word document and write the ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed under the photo
