Learning to Recycle

Introduction

Have you ever thought about how much paper we use in school today?  The idea of recycling has become a necessity for each and every one of us to look for ways to recycle in all aspects of our lives.  In order for students to understand why they are recycling, why it is so important to recycle, and what it means to the environment and our planet in general, we need to educate them in a way that inspires them to do so without feeling that they are forced.  The three R's: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Did you know:

  • In Panama we do not have a culture of recycling
  • Why are we indifferent
  • Each person creates about 1.1 pounds of waste every single day
  • Each ton of mixed paper that is recycled can save the energy equivalent to 185 gallons of gasoline
  • Recycling 1 ton of aluminum cans conserves the equivalent of 1,665 gallons of gasoline
  • The energy saved by recycled just one bottle could light a 100-watt bulb for 4 hours
  • 98 tons of various resources are required to make one ton of paper

In this webquest we will have fun, we will work in 10 teams of five and we will explore new ways and ideas to create awareness among the students and we will end-up with some art projects out of recycling materials.

Task

Students are going to gather information from the websites below to analize and give their point of view, why our culture are not taking part in the recycling process of our country?  What limitations do we have?

How do you recycle aluminum, plastic, and paper products;

Students will investigate the 3 R's (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle), and keep a record of interesting ideas on how to recycle or reuse items in the school;

Your research group will be responsible to develop Recycling Awareness Campaign in the school; and informative and decorative murals around the school;

For one week, you will promote recycling activities at the school and at the end of the week, we will conclude with a big fair: promote recycling games, making recycling arts and crafts contest;

Finally you will present your reflections about the importance of recycling and your experience in getting people envolve.

Process

First day:

The class will be divided into 10 groups of 5. The fist five groups will be encharged to gather important information and statistics about recycling in our country.  That information will be placed on three different exhibits of the school.

This same group will be encharged to organize an exhibits contest for the last day.  Free topic on recycling.  Three winners for that day.
