A Trip In East Asia

Mica Ferguson

Have you ever wanted to take a trip to a country in East Asia? There are many countries to go to, but there are three we will focus on specifically. Japan, South Korea, and Japan. Each of these countries are very close to each other, but the cultures are very different. These countries each have something to offer that could interest a potential tourist.

Task

Your task is to individually look at provided resources to learn more about the three East Asian countries.

You will have the choice of:

Japan

South Korea

China

You will make presentations with information from the resources about what you learned about the country. Add in if the country is a place you would want to go to and why do you want to go there. What made this country unique? What attracted you to this country?

Process

1. Pick your destination. Would you like to go to either Japan, South Korea, or China?

2. Research your destination! There are many websites that provide information on your country of choice and I have provided some for you here.

Japan:

https://www.youtube.com/user/MyHusbandisJapanese/about?spfreload=10

This is the YouTube channel of an American woman who married a Japanese man. In their videos, they both offer information on what it is like living in Japan and give advice on what one should do while living there. They also make sure to state the differences between living in America and in Japan, so it is definitely very informative. They also show places in Japan like thrift stores and shrines, popular tourist destinations and show what one can do there.

Students can read about Japan and even play games here. They can learn how to make origami, learn recipes, and learn about pop culture.

South Korea:

Offers a large variety of information on South Korea, such as travel destinations within South Korea, different types of food, holidays, shopping, etc. Students can look through the variety of links to see what interests them about South Korea. Students will only be focusing on the Activities & Events link of this website.

Students can read here about current Korean popular culture, such as music, art, and it’s ever growing popularity in other countries.

http://www.incultureparent.com/2011/04/korean-craft-make-a-traditional-sam-taeguk-fan/

Students can read about how to make crafts from Korea here. Like paper fans and drums. We could do these crafts in class or the children could do them by themselves on their own and show them to the class.

China:

Features travel destinations in China, such as the Great Wall of China, The Yellow Mountains, and even places to go visit giant pandas. Also includes videos and pictures of the destinations.

http://www.dltk-holidays.com/china/

Features a variety of paper crafts that can be done in China. You could potentially pick a few of these crafts to do in class or on your own at home.

Features a video about Chinese New Year.

3. Write down any information about the country or anything that sticks out to you as you research your country. You will place your information in your Powerpoint later.

4. Place your information in powerpoint. You can put it in sentence form or bullet form. Try to make your powerpoint fun and colorful. Use pictures and descriptive information from the sites provided. Use interesting slide designs, which Powerpoint has several for use.

  • If you would like, feel free to use another medium to display your information. You can use another computer program, make your own video, or use poster board.

5. Once completed, your Powerpoints will be presented in class on the date assigned.

Evaluation

Students will be evaluated based on:

  • If they followed the directions given and all information is available and accurate.
    • Is the country a place the student would like to visit?
    • Why does the student want to visit this country?
    • What attracted the student to the country?
    • What made the country unique?
  •  The assignment is in on time.
  • The students are interactive and energetic during their presentation. They are not afraid to answer questions during their presentation.
  • The creativity of their assignments. Is the presentation colorful? Is it interactive?
Conclusion

What I want accomplished is for students to learn more about the world outside of the United States. I chose these three countries in East Asia specifically because they are probably the most popular three from East Asia and the ones students are most likely to know about. Perhaps by doing this students might gain interest in going to a foreign country.

The purpose of this webquest is to explore other cultures. While the focus is on East Asia specifically, the overall goal is to interest children in other cultures and have them possibly move on to researching other countries on their own.
