Understanding Manzanar

Introduction

Understanding Manzanar

Miss Mullin's WebQuest

Welcome to your first WebQuest in ELA! In order to successfully complete this WebQuest, you will need the following: your Understanding Manzanar WebQuest Notes worksheet, a pencil, and an additional piece of paper. Once you have that, you're all set!

Note: Make sure the computer you are sitting at has a pair of headphones attached, you will need them for this activity.

[The housing at Manzanaar]

Manzanar relocation camp was established after Pearl Harbor in 1942. It became a site where thousands of Japanese, American-born Japanese, and other individuals were sent to live. In this WebQuest, you will learn about what those individuals endured before, during, and after their stays at Manzanar relocation camp.

Remember: the focus of our unit is prejudice and discrimination. As you answer the questions on the worksheet - use the other piece of blank paper to record any notes that may assist you in writing your final essay. You may also record any questions, comments, or general observations you may have during the WebQuest.

Task

Your Task:

You will be asked to watch a video, view images, and read multiple articles about the containment camp in California called Manzanar - and the greater issue of discrimination in the United States.

As you view and read these sources, you will be asked to record your findings and answer questions in the Understanding Manzanar WebQuest handout. Remember to record specific quotations from the articles, as you may want to use them for your final essay. You may also write additional notes to yourself on a seperate piece of paper you can keep in your Writing Tab.

You have two/three days to complete this task, so use your time wisely. Rewatch, or review, any sources at any time.

Process

Task One:

View the video below and respond to questions 1-9 on the worksheet. I suggest watching the video twice to make sure you have fully completed the questions.

Now that you have completed all nineteen questions on the worksheet, respond to the Essential Question which asks: "What were some of the causes and effects of discrimination that people felt at Manzanar?" Give as many examples as you can and respond in complete sentences.

Evaluation

Evaluation:

You will be evaluated on the completion of the worksheet and a discussion that will follow. To ensure that you are prepared for discussing the work and turning it in, refer to the following checklist to make sure your work is complete.

Your work is complete if:

- All questions are answered in complete sentences.

- Handwriting is neat and clear.

- The answers to questions 10-14 explain how the images communicate discrimination or prejudice.

- The answers to questions 15-17 are quotations from the text, indicated with quotation marks.

- The Essential Question is answered at response portion at the bottom of the backside of the page.
