Critical Issues: Poverty

Introduction

Poverty in America

Poverty is a relative concept; it is a concept that can change based on the person and the situation.

This may help clear up relativity.  Let's say you live in Rose, Nebraska.  A big town to you might be Burwell; however, a Burwell resident might think Burwell is small and that Grand Island is actually a big town.  Still, someone in GI might argue Omaha is really a big town because GI is tiny; still further, Omaha residents might say New York city is a large town instead of Omaha.

Poverty is a similar relative concept, and beliefs involving poverty often differ between people.

However, many people believe in similar beliefs involving poverty.  You may believe in some of these ideas; you may think some are ridiculous.  Still, these are ideas held by great majorities of people in America and have the potential to influence how people view you.

Plus, the federal government holds beliefs regarding poverty and what type of income constitutes poverty.

Task

After research and reflection, you will present one of these beliefs surrouning poverty and/or success to the English 4 class.  Rubric for the presentation is available under the evaulation section.  Presentation order will be determined Tuesday; presentations will be given Tuesday in class.

Process

To accomplish the task portion of this assignment, follow the steps below.

1. Numerous beliefs surround the ideas of poverty and success; these are the main ones. Check out each link and read the material (there will be a quiz next Tuesday).

2. The poverty line is a number provided yearly by the U. S. Census Bureau to determine poverty status for American citizens.  The number takes into account housing rates, wage information, food costs, and general living expenses; essentially, the poverty line is a figure that suggests whether or not an individual makes the minimum level of income to adequately live in America.

3.  Most myths or stereotypes contain a grain of truth.  The original belief may have been based on a real experience or situation, but typically, the belief has been completely blown up to the point it cannot apply to all individuals in the particular situation.
