Learning about Shapes

Introduction

Good Morning and Welcome to Kindergarten Math. Today we are going to take put our masks on and we are going to jump right into learning about shapes. We are going to be comparing all the shapes to one another as well as looking to see how many are in the classroom. After that we are going to take each shape and count how many sides each shape have and compare them to one another.

Task

Today, we are going to put our masks on and jump right into seeing all different shapes and how they are in the classroom and then comparing to thing in your house that have them too. As a class, we are going to say each shapes name and how many sides they have.

Process

In groups:

  1. First each student will have a 2D shape and they will observe it saying what it looks like- a rectangle looks like a pillow
  2. The students then will identify the shape
  3. The student will then say how many sides the shape has
  4. Next the students will compare each shape by looking at the sides-meaning if the shape has the same number of sides or not
  5. It is important that each student know the difference between a rectangle and a square, or knowing that a circle and oval have no sides.
Evaluation

Beginning  Developing  Very Good  Super  Score

Ability to identify the number of sides of the shapes.  Student was able to identify the number of sides on 1-2 shapes.  Student was able to identify the number of sides on 2-4 shapes.  Student was able to identify the number of sides on 5-7 shapes.  Student was able to identify the number of sides for all of the shapes.  35%
Ability to identify the difference between the shapes and the number of their sides  Student was able to identify the difference between 1-2 shapes and the number of their sides.  Student was able to identify the difference between 2-4 shapes and the number of their sides.  Student was able to identify the difference between 5-7 shapes and the number of their sides.  Student was able to identify the difference of all of the shapes and the number of their sides.  30%
