Introduction
Welcome: The Muscular System
Description: With this WebQuest as your guide, you will be able to identify the major muscles of the body and their functions. After completing this WebQuest, you will work in groups to create a dance that addresses the three categories of muscles in the body.
Grade Level: 3
Curriculum: Health
Keywords: Smooth Muscle, Cardiac Muscle, Skeletal Muscle, Voluntary, Involuntary
Author: Ally Funk
Task
1. What are the three types of major muscles in the body?
2. What are the ten major Skeletal Muscles and their functions?
3. What are the differences between voluntary and involuntary muscles? Give two examples for each.
4. Name one exercise for each of the ten major skeletal muscles.
5. Work in a group of three to create a dance based on the "Pop See Ko" video, include three different types of muscles, identify the skeletal muscles that you are engaging during the dance. https://www.bing.com/search?q=pop+see+ko+gonoodle&form=EDGTCT&qs=LS&cvid=a2a5b1d5dd98433d97c91c597ec0ec56&pq=pop+see+k&cc=US&setlang=en-US&PC=HCTS
In order to answer the task questions, you and the other two people in your group will work through this WebQuest: you will watch the link to the "Pop See Ko" video, view the Muscular System diagrams, learn about different types of exercises to engage the ten major muscles of the body, and navigate through several educational health sites.

- What do you think is burning?
- Muscles - do you know any muscles we just used?
Body & Transitions
- Each student will get a clothespin.
- On command, students will squeeze the clothespin.
- They will feel the tension in the clothespin.
- We will have a teacher led discussion about muscles contracting like the clothespin - addressing the three types of muscle. (chart)
- Smooth Muscle
- Cardiac
- Skeletal
- Pass out picture for students to fill out as we learn the six major skeletal muscles.
- After learning each new muscle, students will give examples of usage of that muscle.
Closure
- Students will be in partners.
- With the same GoNoodle video, students will create their own dance using at least three of the major muscles.
- Students will have 10 minutes to create their dance.
