Introduction

You will be able to recognize how cooperation, conflicts, and treaties are involved in changing relationships of Native American tribes with other cultures and with the federal government.  Also, You will be able to distinguish among federal, state, and tribal governments with respect to sovereignty and autonomy.

Task

Follow the directions in the process tab.  Create a file on the desktop.  Make the title, Your Name - NMH-Class Period.  Put all documents/powerpoints and pages you want saved for the two classes you will be in the lab.  You may email the file to your personal email, too.

Process

In order to understand the relationship of the tribes in the United States, it is important to know the policies that the United States had about native tribes.

Native American Policies

Access the Native American Tribes & the United States Government website.  

            Define Native American Tribe Policy.

            What was the responsibility of the Bureau of Indian Affairs?

Fill in the blanks:

Using the wikipedia site for "The Apache Wars," describe one war fought by the Native Americans against the United States.  

            Begin your research with "The Apache Wars," but do specific research on     the war and the individuals in the war. 

            Create a powerpoint using 4-8 slides with information and illustrations.  The last slide should have a bibliography of the websites you used.

Search the New Mexico Constitution for references to Native Americans.  You could find the words “Native American” or “tribes” by using the F3 function.

            Identify the article, section and clause when you write the sentences that           identify the agreement with Native Americans.
