Introduction
This unit plan of lessons for multicultural music include three pieces of music for 8th grade students, and the content areas include ESOL and Music. The big idea of this unit lesson is to help students realize that music has a great power to enrich their lives, and express their feelings. Also I wanted to expose my students to music from all of the world, recognizing learning music can help them learn the different cultures behind of each music, and learning the history of each nation that is represented in the music.
Task
I am going to divide students into several groups, and each students in his/her group to select one of actors in the drama. Once each group member has select a position, ask them to create a drama by themselves which should based on the original song. Give students one week to let them practice and ask them to play in front of other audiences in next week's class, after finish this performance, ask every student to write a reflection paper about this experience, and turn it in to teacher for final approval.
Process
- A. Introduction (5 mins):
- B. ask the students to discuss the following three questions: Who plays music in the class? What instruments do you play? What kind of music do you like to listen to? Who likes to sing?
- C. Performace Activity (30 mins):
a) Whole class- 5mins. Play the whole song once, to give students a main idea about the song. Play song again and have students try to sing along.
b) Group work-20 minsdivide students into several groups, and each students in his/her group to select one of actors in the drama. Once each group member has select a position, ask them to create a drama by themselves which should based on the original song
c) Whole class- 5mins. At the end of class, ask students to sing the song accurately
Evaluation
National and New York State Standards:
This lesson is intended to address NYS ESOL standard 1: Students will read, write, listen, and speak for information and understanding.
During the activity, students will be working not only with sounds but also with meaning. From lyric activity, students will listen to, write, gather, organize, and discuss lyrics from listen the song three times. Students will be able to read or perform the song accurately.
The lesson will also address Music Standard 2.1: Sing with accuracy in a developmentally appropriate range: after practice the song several times, students will be able to sing the song "Do-Re-Mi" accurately. Also based on Music Standard 1.2: Read and perform solfege patterns, at the end of class, students will be ask to perform the song in front of the whole class.
One more requirement is that all members of the group need to contribute to the construction of the drama. Also at the end of the class, every student need to write a reflection paper about what did they learn from this class.
Conclusion
This lesson helps students engage in a joyful learning environment, and create a memorable musical experience for their childhood. After learning the song of Do-Re-Mi, students will be able to have a basic knowledge about the seven notes of each song. In terms of language goals, students will be able to learn related vocabulary, expressions frequently, and arise the students' interests in music. In additional, after attending to music class, student will have a better understanding of music and they would like to pursue music in the future. What's more, the musical skills will be developed by attending this class, and students will also grow socially as they communicate with other classmates and friends through class activities.
