RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912, after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, UK, to New York City, U.S.

But, there is so much more to the tragic story of the Titanic.

What happened?

Could it have been prevented?

How many lives were lost? Did the Captain and the crew fail the passengers?

Task

Your missions in this "quest":

Through this webquest, you and an the assigned partner will learn about the sequence of events around the sinking of the "unsinkable" Titanic, and organize the events into a timeline, using an on-line Timeline tool.

You will learn about the varying classes of people aboard the ship and how this impacted their voyage aboard the ship.

Make and present your own Prezi presentation to the class.

Process

1. Titanic Timeline

Using the internet, you and your partner will search for websites that walk through the timeline of events around the Titanic. This timeline would perhaps take the audience through the hours leading up the sinking of the ship and events unfolding during its sinking.

Use the link below to get you started BUT make sure you try your own searches for unique viewpoints of the unfolding events using Google. I don't want everyone's timeline to look the same! Find some interesting tidbits about those hours around the Titanic setting sail, the fear of the passengers, and the sinking of the Titanic! What about the time after the sinking? What happened in those days, weeks and even years after the sinking?
Assign one partner to take notes and write down details you want to highlight.

Conclusion

The Titanic is historically remembered for being the unsinkable ship that sank on her maiden voyage in April 1912.

Titanic records prove that the ship was the largest one ever made back in 1912. Titanic records also show that the ship cost $7.5 million to construct and was made Belfast, Ireland. Over 14,000 men helped build this epic ship over three years, and the Titanic was advertised to be the most luxurious and safest floating 5 star hotel, sporting the first swimming pool on a cruise ship.

The ship sailed safely from Belfast to Southampton, England, where it was docked until its maiden voyage was set for April 10, 1912.

After only four days at sea, the Titanic hit an iceberg and sank on April 15.
1,517 people died.

Teacher notes:

This webquest is designed for 7-8th graders.

The students will learn about the events leading up to the sinking of the Titanic and the understand the make-up of her passengers, as well as research the controversial aspects around the tragedy.

Tip: Take time to familiarize the students with some of the technological tools in advance to save time when they are working through the webquest assignments. I would strongly recommend getting the accounts set up for Tiki-Toko, Prezi, and for the Timeline software.
