Learning About Planets - Year 5 Science

Introduction

WHAT DO ALREADY KNOW ABOUT OTHER PLANETS & SPACE

Each group will write 3 things they already know about space and planets and share them with the class.

INTITIAL RESEARCH

Students given online links and required to  research;

            Planet names

            Planet orbit time compared to earth

            Relative size of planets to earth and other planets

            Famous Astronomers

                        Galileo

                        Copernicus

                        Khayyam

Task

QUIZ

Designed to test students understanding on planets and famous astronomers so far.

 

TASK 1

Each group allocated one planet

Give groups their interview questions

Groups to conduct further research based on knowledge needed to answer questions correctly.

Write script for newscast

Construct video recording of responses to questions with I-Movie

Edit recording with I-Movie

Present complete newscast to the entire class

 

TASK 2 – EXTENSION ACTIVITY

            CONSTUCT A MODEL OF OUR SOLAR SYSTEM

Once students finish newscast, begin constructing a model of our solar system working in the same groups.

Each group makes a planet. Groups allowed to pick there planet (first come, first served – encourages completion of Task 1)

Using the foam provided by the teacher, shape a semi circle version of your planet considering the scale and relative size to the sun and earth.

Paint planet with the right colour’s based on research.

Place on black background organized by the teacher.
