Push and pull effects: Marionettes

Introduction

This webquest is designed for 2nd grade students and elaborates the effects of force by using Marionettes.

Introduction:  Marionettes have been used for story-telling and performing arts throughout human history. Marionette is a puppet controlled from above by strings or wires and works on the principle of force. Have you ever watched a marionette show? Have you ever made one? Do you know how these puppets move? No? Congratulations then! You are about to find out.

Task

 You will prepare a small presentation/skit using marionettes to share your knowledge of push and pull effects. Through this skit you will explain;

  • How different strengths of pushes and pulls affect the movement of the puppet (contact forces)
  • What will happen if, no one is pulling the strings (force of gravity)

Process

Step 1: For this task you need to divide into groups of 4 students.

Step 2: To begin with watch this video. It will give you the basic knowledge of this topic and will help you to gather information for the skit.

Step 3: Also read these books for extra information.

Motion: Push and Pull, Fast and Slow by Darlene R. StilleGravity Is a Mystery by Franklyn Mansfield BranleyStep 4: After this research discuss your findings with other members of your group and think how you are going to use this information to prepare your presentation.

Step 5: Now it’s time to prepare your skit. Each student within the group should be allocated a different task.

Designer/Maker: Design and create two marionettes, using the instructions in this video. You can use the material provided in the classroom.
