Jamestown 1607

Introduction

As a class we just finished reading "Blood on the River: James Town 1607", which is a historical fiction chapter book. We saw the colonization of James Town through the eyes of Samuel, a fictional character. Or was it really fiction?

Have you ever wondered if the stories of Pocahontas, John Smith and others were true?  Were these people real?  Where was the first permanent English settlement in North America?  Why did those people come to North America? How did the local Native Americans react to the settlers?

These are all questions that you answer after you take the time to Discover the Jamestown Settlement.  This WebQuest will take you through this time period in history to find answers, view videos, and then share those answers with your classmates in a PowerPoint presentation.

Task

1. With an assigned partner, students will complete this webquest on the Jamestown settlement.

2. Students will have some time in class to do some research, but should plan on completing alot of this   The division of work will be equal, and is listed in the process section.

3. Students will follow links to do research, related to specific questions.

4. As they are looking through information, they will be taking notes (on a provided graphic organizer) but also making inferences about what they are reading.

5. Once all sections of graphic organizer are complete, students will join together to talk about what they researched.  The group will synthesize all information to answer the culminating question:

Were the settlers successful in America? Why or why not?

6.  Finally, students will create one group PowerPoint presentation of their information.  This will be presented to the class.

Process

1. Divide class into groups of 3 (assigned by teacher).

2. Hand out graphic organizer.  (each member will need one)

3. Read through introduction page.

4. Here we go!!!  Some work for this WebQuest will be done individually, and some will be done as a group.

  •  Start together, by following the link to the map of Jamestown Settlement. One of you will need to save this picture and add it to your Powerpoint presentation.

                     http://www.historyisfun.org/pdf/Indians-Lesson-1/Map.pdf

5. Now you are ready to do some work individually.

  • There are three questions to answer on your graphic organizer.
Each one of you will follow the links that go with your question.
When you have found a complete answer to your question, you will
fill in the the information on your paper.
  •  Pick who will do each of the questions.  Once you have divided the
work, you will work on your own computer to follow the links, and
find the answers to your question(s).

Partner 2:          Choose one important person you would like to research for your group.         Then follow the links listed below that person.  Read through the information so that you will be able to answer, "Why is he/she important? What did he/she do?"  Make sure you are able to answer both questions!!
Pocahontas:

John Smith:

John Rolfe:

Read the first paragraph of: http://www.virtualjamestown.org/jrolfe.html

_________________________________________________________________________________________________

Partner 3
You will be writing 2 descriptive paragraphs.  The first paragraph will answer the following question:
What was life like for the settlers?  (tell what went well, what went wrong, did the settlers enjoy life in Jamestown?)

watch this video clip to help you answer this question:     http://wmstreaming.whro.org/whro/jamestown/legacy2.asf

The second question you will answer is: What was daily life like for the Powhatan Indians?

http://www.geocities.com/bigorrin/powhatan_kids.htm
watch the following video clip, this will also help you answer this question:

http://wmstreaming.whro.org/whro/jamestown/indians1.asf
Now that you have read about both questions.  Write a three (or more) sentence paragraph to answer EACH question.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

6. After each partner has finished answering his/her questions, you will join together again to answer the last question on your paper:

Do you think the settlers were successful in America? To answer this question, you will discuss together what you learned. You will talk about each aspect and whether you think they made good decisions.  Think about why they came, if they achieved their goal.  Was life easy for them?  Did most of them live to have the success together?  Did the settlement last?

There are many things to think about, even more that you may be thinking about.  So, together you will need to make a decision and write a 3 sentence paragraph describing whether or not the settlers were successful in America.

 7. Show your graphic organizer papers to your teacher to check whether you have included all information and completed each section successfully.

8.  Now you will take the information from your paper to create a PowerPoint presentation of everything you have learned.
Your PowerPoint must include the following slides: --Title Page (names of your group members and title of presentation) --A map of area (this was saved to your network drive) You must also include  a caption telling why you think they chose this area (inferring) --Partner 1 information (make sure that you write the questions as well as the answers that partner 1 has written) (summarizing) --Partner 2 information (Clearly make a heading of the name of the person           chosen, then include the information that partner 2 has written) (analysis, summarizing) --Partner 3 information (have a heading for each group of people--settlers and Native Americans, with the paragraph below each heading)                (synthesis of information) --Evaluation of Success of Settlers--this is your group paragraph. (write the heading before you write the paragraph)
You will create this PowerPoint together and save it to one person's network.  You need to have this person be the one who has already saved your map of Jamestown, so that can be inserted into your presentation.

Tell the teacher you are done, let her review it, make changes as needed.

 CONGRATULATIONS!! You completed this WebQuest!
