Angles

Introduction

This is a week long unit on angles.

By the end of this unit the students will be able to recognize a right angle, acute angle, straight angle and obtuse angle.

This unit incorporates mini lessons, group work, technology, hands on learning and assessments.

Task

Day 1: Introduce students to the angles by watching this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgfSwlqi4Qg on the Panaboard. Then complete an independent practice worksheet "Label the angles".

Day 2: Watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kt9i7rlrBM on the Pana Board. Use gestures with your friends. Class discussion.

Day 3: Watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_OuHtL7Bug on the Pana Board. Students will see where angles are in real life. Students will use a protractor to draw "real life" angles and get creative. Share their angles.

Day 4: Use a document camera to create designs using colored polygons. Have students create their own designs with markers and find the angles in their designs. Share their work.

Day 5: Review all 3 videos we watched this week. What did you learn? As a group, create a poster with everything you learned. Share the posters. Display in the room.

Process

Materials Needed:

Panaboard, laptops, document camera, copies of assessments, a set of polygons for each student, white paper, pencils and markers.

Day 1:

Introduce students to the angles by watching this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgfSwlqi4Qg on the Panaboard.

Ask questions such as “What did you learn? What do you think our next math unit is about?” Draw examples of angles in their math notebooks and label them.

Then complete an independent practice worksheet "Label the angles". You can find the worksheet on the provided link.http://www.superteacherworksheets.com/geometry/angles_TTZZR.pdf

Day 2:

Ask the class what they learned yesterday in math. Tell them we will continue to work on angles today. Tell them we will watch a video that teaches you a fun way to remember the angles.

Watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kt9i7rlrBM on the Pana Board.

Review the gestures as a class. You may want to watch the video a second time. Have the students use the gestures with their friends for 5 minutes.

Day 3:

Begin the lesson by reviewing the different types of angles. Tell the students we will watch another video that goes a little bit more indepth and teaches you a little bit more about angles. Have them take notes in their math notebook during the video. Watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_OuHtL7Bug on the Pana Board.

Discuss the video. Ask the students what they thought was important.

Then have the students practice drawing angles with a protractor. Have them label the angles.

Day 4:

Discuss the different types of angels. Use a document camera to create designs using colored polygons.

Have students create polygon creatures with markers and find the angles in their designs. Share their work.

Day 5:

Review all 3 videos we watched this week. What did you learn? Review the gestures. Take this online quiz together as a class on the Pana boardhttp://www.softschools.com/quizzes/math/decimals/quiz3206.html. Discuss your results.

As a group, create a poster with everything you learned. Be sure all angles are on the poster. Share the posters. Display in the room.

Evaluation

GROUP RUBRIC:

                5 points                                                      3 Points                                                    2 Points

No grammatical errors. More than 3 colors are used on the posters.

1-3 grammatical errors. Less than 3 colors were used.

More than 3 grammatical errors. Less than 2 colors were used.

Right angle, Straight angle, Obtuse angle and Actute angle are properly drawn and labeled. They were done with a ruler, so they are straight.

1 or 2 mistakes. A mistake consists of not properly labeled or drawn.

More than 2 mistakes.

The team worked together and showed respect to each other and stayed on task the entire time.

The team worked together and showed respect to each other and stayed on task most of the time.

The team had a difficult time working together and staying on task during group work time.

Conclusion

YOU'RE DONE!

Great job!
